Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was placed on his bier before burial, people gathered around him and began to pray for him. I was among them. Only one person made me anxious, who held my shoulder from behind. I turned and saw that it was Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He prayed for mercy for Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "You have not left behind anyone whose deeds I would prefer to meet Allah with, more than yours. By Allah! I am certain that Allah will join you with your two companions (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him), and the reason is that I have often heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'I went, and Abu Bakr and Umar went; I entered, and Abu Bakr and Umar entered; I came out, and Abu Bakr and Umar came out.' So I am sure that Allah will certainly join you with both of them."
