Hadith 261

Muhammad bin Abdul Malik narrated that indeed Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) entered upon Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was at the door, and (the rebels) had besieged him. So (Mughira, may Allah be pleased with him) said: Choose one of three things: either we burn another door for you besides the one upon which they (the rebels) are, so you can go out, then mount your ride and go to Makkah; they will never feel at ease with you while you are there. Or you mount your ride and go to Sham (Syria). Indeed, they are the people of Sham and among them is Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Or you take those who are with you and go out; surely you have a large number and strength with you, you fight, you are upon the truth and they are upon falsehood. Upon this, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for your suggestion that I mount my ride until I reach Makkah, indeed, they will never feel at ease with me while I am there. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “A man from Quraysh will commit heresy in Makkah, upon him will be poured the punishment of the worlds,” so I will never be that man. As for your suggestion that I mount my ride and go to Sham, indeed, they are the people of Sham and among them is Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), but I will never leave my place of migration and the neighborhood of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in it. And as for your suggestion that I take those who are with me and go out, I will never be the first to oppose the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by filling a vial with unjustly shed blood.
