Sayyiduna Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) had his new shirt brought and wore it. I do not think it even reached his collarbones, until he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “All praise is due to Allah who has clothed me with (this garment) with which I cover my private parts and with which I adorn myself in my life.” Then he said: “Do you know why I said this? I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) had his new clothes brought, wore them—I think they reached his collarbones—until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the like of what I said. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘By the One in whose hand is my soul! Whenever a Muslim servant wears new clothes and then says the like of what I have said, then he turns to his old and worn-out clothes which he has taken off and gives them to a Muslim, poor, or needy person, and he gives them only for the sake of Allah, then surely he is in Allah’s protection, guarantee, and neighborhood, as long as even a single thread of it remains upon him, whether he is alive or dead, alive or dead, alive or dead.’”
