Sayyiduna Abu Umayyah Makhzumi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that indeed a thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who confessed (to the crime) and no goods were found with him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I do not think that you have committed theft." He said: Why not. He (the Prophet) again said: "I do not think that you have committed theft." He said: Why not. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take him away and cut off his hand, then bring him back to me." So they cut off his hand and then brought him back. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance." He said: I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Accept his repentance."
