'Abdullah bin 'Umar said that Sa'd bin Ubadah complained of illness. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit him accompanied by 'Abdul Rahman bin 'Auf, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud. As he entered (his room) he found him in a swoon. Upon this he said: Has he died? They said: Messenger of Allah, it is not so. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wept. When the people saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) weeping, they also began to weep. He said. Listen, Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He may show mercy.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
INNA LILLAHI MA AKHADHA:
This child whom Allah is taking,
whose soul He has taken,
belongs to Him,
not to you.
Therefore, when He has taken what is His own and not what is yours,
what right do you have to be excessively distressed over it?
If someone takes back what he had deposited or entrusted as an amanah (trust),
does the trustee have any right to object to it? Therefore, act with patience and tranquility.

(2)
WA LAHU MA A‘TA:
Whatever He has granted you is His,
it has not left His ownership.
And He has the right to dispose of His property as He wills.

(3)
KULLU SHAY’IN ‘INDAHU BI AJALIN MUSAMMA:
Whatever He has granted, He has also fixed a time and duration for it,
when that duration is completed and its time arrives, He will take it back.
Therefore, after its appointed time is fulfilled, whatever is taken from you could not have been delayed or brought forward.
Thus, your complaint is unwarranted. If a person reflects on these comprehensive words of yours,
then after being deprived of anything,
being content and satisfied with Allah’s decree and His decision and predestination is not difficult.
And for him, passing through the stage of patience and submission becomes very easy.

(4)
NAFSUHU TAQAQ‘A‘:
As his soul was departing, a sound was coming from his throat, just like the sound
that occurs when water is poured into an old and worn-out water skin.
GHASHIYYAH:
The letter ghayn has a fatḥah, the letter sheen has a kasrah, and the ya is mushaddad. It can mean the severity of calamity and hardship, and also the crowd and gathering of relatives and close ones.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
When someone dies, it is completely natural for his relatives, friends, and loved ones to be saddened and grieved, and as a result, for tears to flow from their eyes and for other signs of weeping to appear. This is a sign that the person’s heart contains feelings of love, compassion, and empathy, which are a valuable and praiseworthy asset of humanity.
Therefore, the Shari‘ah has not imposed any restriction or prohibition on this; rather, to a certain extent, it has praised and encouraged it.
That is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Allah shows mercy to those of His servants whose hearts contain mercy and compassion for others.”

(2)
If a person, instead of uttering something wrong (the details of which will come later),
says with his tongue: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un,” makes supplication and seeks forgiveness, and says such things that become a means of attaining Allah’s mercy and His grace and bounty, then his relatives and the deceased benefit from it.

(3)
In the hadith, there is mention of the severe illness of your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) daughter, Sayyidah Zaynab (radi Allahu anha)’s child, Sayyidah Umamah (radi Allahu anha), to the extent that her mother feared she would pass away. But due to the blessing of the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), she was cured and lived even after him, and after Sayyidah Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) married her. The same situation occurred with Sayyiduna Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah (radi Allahu anhu): he too, by the blessing of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplication, recovered from that severe illness, and after the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he passed away either in the era of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) or in the era of ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
