Hadith 795

Al-Bara' reported that a person was reciting Surat al-Kahf and there was a horse tied with two ropes at his side, a cloud overshadowed him, and as it began to come nearer and nearer his horse began to take fright from it. He went and mentioned that to the Prophet (ﷺ) in the morning, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That was tranquility which came down at the recitation of the Qur'an.

Ibn Ishaq reported: I heard al-Bara' as saying that a man recited al-Kahf when an animal was there in the house and it began to take fright. And as he looked around, he found a cloud overshadowing it. He mentioned that to the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) . Upon this he said: O so and so, recite on (the surah) as- Sakina descends at the (recitation of the Qur'an) or on account (of the recitation) of the Qur'an.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Shatan:
It refers to a long and extended rope,
which is used to tie a horse.

Benefits and Issues:
Sakinah refers to tranquility of the heart and inner peace, which is the result of Allah Ta'ala's grace and mercy. The recitation of the Qur'an is a means of Allah Ta'ala's mercy, and in this hadith, it has been described in a particular form. For this reason, Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has written that Sakinah is one of the creations of Allah Ta'ala, which becomes a cause of serenity and mercy, and along with it are angels.

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of both is the same.
The explanation of "sakinah" will come in the Book of Tafsir, inshaAllah.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In this, the word (sallama) has the following different meanings:
(a)
This person supplicated for peace and became content with Allah’s decree.
(b)
He was performing prayer (salah), and then he ended the prayer by saying the salam and became free from it.
2.
A similar incident occurred to Usayd ibn Hudayr (radi Allahu anhu) when he was reciting Surah al-Baqarah at night, and his son Yahya was sleeping beside him. His mount became startled, so he stopped reciting and became occupied with looking after his son.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il al-Qur’an, Hadith: 1850)
It is possible that the aforementioned incident also pertains to him, and that he was reciting both Surah al-Baqarah and Surah al-Kahf together, or that he recited some part of Surah al-Baqarah and some part of Surah al-Kahf.
It is also possible that there were multiple incidents.
3.
From this hadith, it is understood that tranquility (sakinah) and serenity descend while reciting the Qur’an, and Allah’s mercy envelops the reciter.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed him of an unseen matter, which is among the signs of prophethood.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
In another narration, angels are mentioned in place of "tranquility" (sakinah).
Therefore, here as well, by "tranquility" (sakinah) what is meant are the angels themselves.

Hadith Commentary:

In one narration, it is mentioned that during the recitation of the Qur’an, a cloud covered the man, drawing nearer to him. At that moment, his horse began to startle.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Qur’an, Hadith: 5011)

In the narration reported from Usayd ibn Hudayr radi Allahu anhu, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“The lights you saw in that cloud were a group of angels who had come to listen to the Qur’an, and if you had continued your recitation, they would not have remained hidden from the people in the morning; rather, the people would have seen them with their own eyes.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Qur’an, Hadith: 5018)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has established a chapter heading for this hadith with these words:
(Bab: The Descent of Tranquility and Angels at the ... Recitation of the Qur’an)
“Tranquility (sakinah) and the descent of angels at the time of Qur’an recitation.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Qur’an, Chapter: 15)
Several such incidents occurred during the era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
Kahf means cave.
In previous times, a few young men, having become disillusioned with polytheism and enamored with monotheism (tawhid), were pursued by the government and the public. Therefore, they sought refuge in a cave in the mountain.
Their detailed story is present in this surah, which is why it is named with the word "Kahf."
This surah also has many virtues. In one hadith, it is mentioned that whoever among the Muslims recites it every Friday, Allah will protect him from the tribulation of Dajjal.
The hadith under discussion also establishes its great virtue.

Hadith Commentary:

The word "sakinah" (tranquility) has appeared multiple times in the Qur'an and Hadith. There are various interpretations regarding its meaning. However, according to our inclination, it refers to a creation of Allah in which there is serenity and tranquility from Allah, and along with it are the angels of mercy.

There are many virtues of this surah. Hazrat Abu Darda (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever memorizes and recites the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of Dajjal." (Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin, Hadith: 1883. (809))
In another narration, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever recites this surah on the day of Jumu‘ah (Friday), a special light will remain for him until the next Jumu‘ah." (Fath al-Bari: 9/72)
