Hadith 784

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered the mosque (and he found) a rope tied between the two pillars; so he said: What is this? They said: It is for Zainab. She prays and when she slackens or feels tired she holds it. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: Untie it. Let one pray as long as one feels fresh but when one slackens or becomes tired one must stop it. (And in the hadith transmitted by Zuhair it is:" He should sit down." )

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
It is understood that one should adopt moderation while performing acts of worship.
Excessive strictness and severity in this regard are blameworthy, because such behavior gives rise to feelings of aversion in one’s nature, which are condemnable. Moreover, such conduct is also contrary to the spirit of worship.
In reality, Allah Ta’ala has created people with different temperaments:
Some people possess great determination and courage.
They adhere to firm resolutions and do not avail themselves of dispensations (rukhsah).
They spend all their time in the worship of Allah.
If needed, they spend their wealth in the path of Allah, and during jihad, they even sacrifice their lives. However, such courageous people are very few.
The majority consists of those who act upon the dispensations and ease provided by the religion.
Most of the rulings of the Shari‘ah pertain to such people.
For such people, the principle has been established that even if the action is little, it should be performed consistently.
Such people have been prohibited from severity in acts of worship so that they do not become weary due to excessive practice. However, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would worship to such an extent that his feet would become swollen.

1312. Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
➊ When the sweetness (delight and pleasantness) of religion is attained, it is manifested in the form of utmost servitude and abundance of prayer. All of our righteous predecessors (salaf salihin), both men and women, fulfilled this standard.
➋ Women are also permitted to perform voluntary prayers (nawafil) in the mosques, provided that arrangements for hijab are in place.
➌ One should strive to remove mistakes and evil with one's hand.
➍ Moderation in worship is the best practice.
➎ In this hadith, the mention of Zaynab radi Allahu anha is correct, not that of Hamnah bint Jahsh. (Shaykh al-Albani)

1644. Commentary:

➊ In a state of laziness, humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘) do not remain during the prayer. And prayer itself is defined by humility and submissiveness; therefore, it has been prohibited. Moreover, it is possible that in a state of laziness and fatigue, the worshipper may intend to say something, but something else slips from his tongue. In addition, such a state can also lead to boredom, which entails abandonment (of the prayer). Therefore, in a state of laziness, fatigue, or sleepiness, one should leave the prayer and rest, so that alertness may return.

➋ One should remove evil (munkar), whether by hand, by tongue, or in whatever way is possible.

➌ A woman may pray in the mosque; there is no dislike (karahah) in this.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Among the female Companions, several were named Zainab. Among them, two women are Mothers of the Believers (radi Allahu anhunna). Which Zainab is mentioned in this hadith? Regarding this, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has discussed the matter in detail in Fath al-Bari. His inclination appears to be that this lady is Umm al-Mu’minin Zainab bint Jahsh (radi Allahu anha). And Allah knows best. (Fath al-Bari, 3/47, Hadith: 1150)

➋ The amount of worship and remembrance should be set to such an extent that a person does not feel excessive hardship.

➌ In the case of feeling hardship, it is permissible to reduce the voluntary (nafl) acts of worship that one has set for oneself.
