Zaid b Khalid al-Juhani said: I would definitely watch at night the prayer observed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . He prayed two short rak'ahs, then two long, long, long rak'ahs, then he prayed two rak'ahs which were shorter than the two preceding rak'ahs, then he prayed two rak'ahs which were shorter than the two preceding, then he prayed two rak'ahs which were shorter than the two preceding, then observed a single one (Witr), making a total of thirteen rak'ahs

Vocabulary of the Hadith:
لَأَرْمُقَنَّ:
I will observe with a deep and prolonged gaze.
Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith, it is understood that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would begin the prayer with two light (khafif) units (rak‘ahs), then he would perform two extremely lengthy units, and after that, each subsequent pair would be shorter than the previous, and at the end, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform one witr. Just as he himself would begin with two light units, he would also instruct others to do the same, as will be mentioned ahead in the narration of Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu). If the two light units are not counted, then the total number of units would be eleven.

Benefit:
In the previous narration, thirteen rak‘ahs are mentioned including the Sunnah prayers of Fajr.
Whereas from this hadith it is understood that, apart from the Sunnah prayers of Fajr, it is also permissible to pray thirteen rak‘ahs instead of eleven.

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ Including the two Sunnah units of the ‘Isha prayer, the total number of night voluntary prayers is thirteen units (rak‘at), of which eleven units are commonly known among the public as Tahajjud. These same units are called Tarawih in Ramadan.
