Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: A group of Bani Isra'il was lost. I do not know what happened to it, but I think (that it underwent a process of metamorphosis) and assumed the shape of rats. Don't you see when the milk of the camel is placed before them, these do not drink and when the milk of goat is placed before them, these do drink. Abu Hurairah (RA) said: I narrated this very hadith to Ka'b and he said: Did you hear this from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ? I ( Abu Hurairah (RA) ) said: Yes. He said this again and again, and I said: Have I read Torah? This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Ishaq with a slight variation of wording.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: You stated this at a time when it had not yet been revealed to you through revelation that a deformed (metamorphosed) animal does not have offspring or progeny.

Takhrij al-Hadith:
This narration, apart from Sahih al-Bukhari [3305], is also found in the following books:
Sahih Muslim [2997 وترقيم دارالسلام : 7496، 7497]
Sahih Ibn Hibban [الاحسان 8؍52 ح6225 دوسرا نسخه : 6258]
Al-Riqaq by Abu Awanah [اتحاف المهرة 15؍555 ح19872]
Musnad Abi Ya‘la [10؍420 ح6031]
Sharh al-Sunnah by al-Baghawi [12؍200 ح3271 وقال : ”هذا حديث متفق على صحته“ مشكل الآثار للطحاوي 8؍339 ح6008]
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah narrated it before Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah:
[المسند 2؍234، 279، 289، 411، 497، 507]
This hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu has been narrated by the famous Tabi‘i Muhammad ibn Sirin. For its other chain «عن أبي سلمة عن أبي هريرة», see Mushkil al-Athar [طبعه جديده، تحفةالاخيار : 6009].
↰ It is thus evident that, according to the principles of hadith, this narration is absolutely authentic. The hadith scholars have unanimously declared it authentic, without any disagreement.
This hadith is abrogated (mansukh) due to another authentic hadith. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «إن الله عزوجل لم يهلك قومًا أو يعذب قومًا فيجعل لهم نسلًا» “Indeed, when Allah destroys a people, He does not leave any of their progeny behind.” [صحيح مسلم : 2663 وترقيم دارالسلام : 6772]; also see Fath al-Bari [7؍160] and Mushkil al-Athar [8؍339، 341، 6؍381].
Presenting an abrogated narration in order to mock authentic ahadith is the practice only of those (the deniers of hadith) who claim to understand the Qur’an “without the Messenger”!

Hadith Commentary:
There is a difference of opinion regarding whether the progeny of those who were wiped out (mamsuh) continues or not. According to the majority (jumhur), their progeny does not continue, and they have interpreted the hadith of the chapter in this light—that revelation had not yet come to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at that time; that is why he spoke in the form of conjecture.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith indicates that mice are, in fact, transformed (masukh) humans.
Previously, mice did not exist, as is explicitly stated in the narration of Sahih Muslim.
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Zuhd wa al-Raqa’iq, Hadith: 7497(2997))
However, in another narration, it is mentioned that monkeys and pigs were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) (that these too are transformed from humans),
so he said:
“Allah, the Exalted, did not leave any progeny for the transformed peoples; monkeys and pigs existed even before them.”
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Qadr, Hadith: 6772(2663))
The reconciliation between these two is that this hadith did not reach Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) and Ka‘b (radi Allahu anhu), and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated this according to his own understanding.
Later, through revelation, it was informed that the progeny of the transformed peoples does not remain; rather, they are wiped from the face of the earth after a few days.
(Fath al-Bari: 6/426)
➋
Since this hadith mentions mice, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has narrated it.
The connection of this hadith to the main subject is clear.
And Allah knows best.
