Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to us, Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir narrated to me, Yahya ibn Jabir al-Ta'i, the judge of Hims, narrated to me, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr narrated to me, from his father Jubayr ibn Nufayr al-Hadrami, that he heard al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an al-Kilabi.
And Muhammad ibn Mihran al-Razi narrated to me (and the wording is his), Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Jabir al-Ta'i, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned the Dajjal one morning, and he lowered and raised (his voice) about him until we thought he was in a cluster of the palm trees. When we went to him, he noticed that in us and said: "What is the matter with you?" We said: O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned the Dajjal this morning, and you lowered and raised (your voice) about him until we thought he was in a cluster of the palm trees. He said: "Other than the Dajjal, I fear more for you. If he comes out while I am among you, then I will be his adversary on your behalf. But if he comes out and I am not among you, then each person must defend himself, and Allah is my successor over every Muslim. He is a young man with curly hair, his eye is obliterated, as if I liken him to 'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Qatan. Whoever among you encounters him, let him recite over him the opening verses of Surat al-Kahf. He will emerge from a place between Sham and Iraq, and will wreak havoc to the right and to the left. O servants of Allah, remain steadfast."
We said: O Messenger of Allah, how long will he remain on earth? He said: "Forty days; a day like a year, a day like a month, a day like a week, and the rest of his days are like your days." We said: O Messenger of Allah, that day which is like a year, will the prayers of one day suffice for us in it? He said: "No, estimate its measure." We said: O Messenger of Allah, how fast will he travel on earth? He said: "Like rain driven by the wind. He will come to a people and call them, and they will believe in him and respond to him. He will command the sky and it will rain, and the earth and it will bring forth vegetation. Their livestock will return to them in the evening with their humps higher than ever, their udders full, and their flanks stretched. Then he will come to another people and call them, but they will reject him, so he will turn away from them, and they will become destitute, with nothing left of their wealth. He will pass by a ruined land and say to it: 'Bring forth your treasures,' and its treasures will follow him like swarms of bees. Then he will call a young man, full of youth, and strike him with a sword, cutting him in two pieces, then call him, and he will come forward with his face shining and laughing. While he is like that, Allah will send the Messiah, son of Maryam, and he will descend at the white minaret in the east of Damascus, wearing two garments dyed with saffron, placing his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, drops fall, and when he raises it, pearls like beads fall from it. No disbeliever who smells his breath will survive, and his breath reaches as far as his sight. He will pursue him until he catches him at the gate of Ludd, and he will kill him. Then 'Isa ibn Maryam will come to a people whom Allah has protected from him, and he will wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise. While he is like that, Allah will reveal to 'Isa: 'I have brought forth servants of Mine whom no one can fight. Take My servants to the mountain.' Then Allah will send Gog and Magog, and they will descend from every slope. The first of them will pass by Lake Tiberias and drink what is in it, and the last of them will pass by and say: 'There was once water here.' The Prophet of Allah, 'Isa, and his companions will be besieged until the head of a bull will be more precious to one of them than a hundred dinars to one of you today. The Prophet of Allah, 'Isa, and his companions will supplicate, and Allah will send upon them (Gog and Magog) worms in their necks, and they will die as one soul. Then the Prophet of Allah, 'Isa, and his companions will descend to the earth and will not find a handspan of land except that it is filled with their stench and filth. The Prophet of Allah, 'Isa, and his companions will supplicate to Allah, and Allah will send birds with necks like the necks of camels, and they will carry them away and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which no house of clay or hair will be spared from, and it will wash the earth until it leaves it like a mirror. Then it will be said to the earth: 'Bring forth your fruits and restore your blessings.' On that day, a group will eat from a pomegranate and take shelter under its skin. The milk will be blessed so much that the milch camel will suffice a large group of people, the milch cow will suffice a tribe of people, and the milch sheep will suffice a clan of people. While they are like that, Allah will send a pleasant wind, which will take them under their armpits and seize the soul of every believer and every Muslim. Only the worst of people will remain, who will copulate like donkeys, and upon them the Hour will be established."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Fakhafada fihi wa rafa‘a:
While discussing it at length,
he sometimes lowered and sometimes raised his voice,
or sometimes belittled its status and rank, saying that he is one-eyed,
he is very insignificant in the sight of Allah,
he will only be able to kill one man,
and later he himself will be killed,
his companions will be defeated and killed, and at other times he described the trial and tribulation of the Dajjal as great, and that supernatural acts will occur at his hands,
therefore every Prophet has warned against his danger.
(2)
Ghayr al-Dajjal akhwafuni ‘alaykum: That is, other tribulations besides the Dajjal seem more frightening to me,
such as internal strife,
greed and desire for the world,
misguiding, deviant leaders.
(3)
Ana hajjijuhu:
I will argue with him using evidence and proof,
this statement was made by you (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) merely by way of supposition,
because they thought perhaps he had already appeared,
otherwise it is established
that his appearance will be in the last era,
as will be mentioned ahead, and that ‘Isa alayhis salam will kill him.
(4)
Ka’anni limushabbihihi:
Since there is no one as ugly and deformed in appearance as the Dajjal,
therefore you used the word ka’anni,
as if.
(5)
Falyuqra ‘alayhi fawatiḥ Surat al-Kahf:
To seek protection from his tribulation, one should recite the opening verses of Surah al-Kahf,
reciting the first three verses is sufficient for protection from the tribulation of the Dajjal,
or, if possible,
one should recite ten verses,
because in the subsequent verses there is mention of human trial and tribulation, and the test of the allure and beauty of worldly things is described for this purpose.
(6)
Khullah:
A path strewn with pebbles,
a pathway.
(7)
‘Aatha:
A past tense verb,
because the occurrence of his corruption is certain, that he will soon spread corruption.
(8)
Iqdiru lahu qadrah:
Estimate the length of the day,
and after the interval at which you usually perform prayers during those days,
continue to perform the prayers at those intervals,
because Allah, as a supernatural act,
will make the first three days equal to a year,
a month, and a week,
the speed of the sun or the earth will be extremely slow,
or he will appear from a region
where the alternation of day and night is infrequent.
This hadith proves that
in regions where day and night are not according to the usual pattern,
they will estimate for prayer and fasting, and in regions where day and night are each six months long,
there, only five prayers in a day and night will not suffice,
rather, five prayers must be performed in every twenty-four hours, and fasting must be observed accordingly,
for this, the day and night of the nearest region should be taken as a reference.
(9)
Kal-ghayth istadbartuhu al-rih:
Like those clouds which are driven by the wind,
meaning he will traverse distances very quickly,
for the trial and testing of people, many supernatural acts will occur at his hands, and all of this will be by Allah’s will and decree.
(10)
Fayusbihuna mumhilin:
They will be afflicted by famine.
(11)
Ya‘asib,
plural of ya‘sub,
the leader of bees,
whom the rest follow in flight.
(12)
Jazlah,
a piece.
(13)
Ramiyat al-ghardh:
The distance of an arrow’s target,
there will be a considerable distance between the two pieces.
(14)
Yanzilu ‘inda al-manarah al-bayda’ sharqi Dimashq:
He (‘Isa alayhis salam) will descend near the white minaret to the east of Damascus.
(15)
Bayna mahrudatayn:
In two yellow garments,
meaning his attire will be extremely beautiful.
(16)
Juman:
Beads or pearls of silver,
according to Hafiz Ibn Kathir, when ‘Isa alayhis salam was raised to the heavens, drops of water were falling from his head,
he will descend in this state,
which will be a sign that he remained alive.
(17)
Fala yaḥillu likafir an yajida rīḥ nafsihi illa mata:
Any disbeliever who senses the fragrance of ‘Isa alayhis salam’s breath,
will not be able to escape death,
this does not mean that he will die instantly,
rather, the intent is that now he will not be able to remain alive, and the Dajjal in particular,
you (‘Isa alayhis salam) will kill,
so that people may see his blood on your spear,
otherwise he too would have perished from your breath,
therefore there is no need for any interpretation.
(18)
Ludd:
Nowadays, it is the airport of Israel and this city is located in the region of Palestine,
near Bayt al-Maqdis.
(19)
Yamsaḥ ‘an wujuhihim:
Out of honor and respect,
he will wipe the dust from their faces that accumulated due to travel,
or, by giving them the news of the Dajjal’s killing,
for blessing and barakah,
and to remove grief, sorrow, and fear, he will pass his hand over them.
(20)
‘Ibadi li:
To fulfill His creative and decreed command, Allah has brought forth His servants, that la yadan li ahadin biqitalihim,
no one has the strength or power to fight them, and when ‘ibad refers to righteous servants, then their attribution to Allah is made directly,
such as ‘ibad al-Rahman,
‘abdahu,
‘abdullah,
but if those bound by creative governance are meant,
who are disbelievers and rebellious, then the attribution is made with the intermediary of lam,
as He said,
“We sent against you Our servants” and in this hadith, ‘ibadi li,
and it is for the companions of ‘Isa alayhis salam.
(21)
Hirz ‘ibadi:
Protect My servants,
give them refuge,
(take them to the mountain) (22)
Hadab:
A hill,
an elevated place,
(23)
Yansilun,
they will be running,
(24)
Buhayrah Tabariyyah,
is in the region of Jordan.
(25)
Kariyyat Tabariyyah,
a city near which the lake is located, and Imam Tabarani
is attributed to this city.
(26)
Kana bihadhihi marratan ma’:
Upon seeing the signs and indications, they will say,
once there used to be water here.
When ‘Isa alayhis salam and his companions are besieged on Mount Tur, due to food shortage,
the head of a cow or ox, which is usually cheaper than regular meat,
its price will reach up to one hundred (100)
dinars.

the rain will reach everywhere,
even leaking through roofs.

under the tribe (family),
and under that,
(33)
Fakhidh,
the household of a single man, his family and dependents.
(34)
Taharuj:
Mixing,
intermingling,
what is meant is sexual relations.

´It was narrated from An-Nawwas bin Sam'an, who said:` "The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) mentioned the Dajjal one morning, he belittled him and mentioned his importance until we thought that he might be amidst a cluster of date-palms." He said: "We departed from the presence of the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w), then we returned to him, and he noticed that(concern) in us. So he said: 'What is wrong with you?'" We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! You mentioned the Dajjal this morning, belittling him, and mentioning his importance until we thought that he might be amidst a cluster of the date-palms.' He said: 'It is not the Dajjal that I fear for you. If he were to appear while I am among you, then I will be his adversary on your behalf. And if he appears and I am not among you, then each man will have to fend for himself. And Allah will take care of every Muslim after me. He is young, with curly hair, his eyes protruding, resembling someone from 'Abdul-Uzza bin Qatan. Whoever among you sees him, then let him recite the beginning of Surah Ashab Al-Kahf.'"He said: 'He will appear from what is between Ash-Sham and Al-'Iraq, causing devastation toward the right and toward the left. O worshippers of Allah! Hold fast!'" We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! How long will he linger on the earth?' He said: 'Forty days, a day like a year, a day like a month, a day like a week, and the remainder of his days are like your days.'" We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Do you think that during the day that is like a year, the Salat of one day will be sufficient for us?' He said: 'No. You will have to estimate it.' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! How fast will he move through the earth.' He said: 'Like a rain storm driven by the wind. He will come upon a people and call them, and they will deny him, and reject his claims. Then he will leave them, and their wealth will follow him. They will awaken in the morning with nothing left. Then he will come upon a people and call them, and they will respond to him, believing in him. So he will order the Heavens to bring rain, and it shall rain, and he will order the land to sprout, and it will sprout. Their cattle will return to them with their coats the longest, their udders the fullest and their stomachs the fattest.' He said: 'Then he will come upon some ruins, saying to it: "Bring me your treasures!" He will turn to leave it, and it will follow him, like drone bees. Then he will call a young man, full of youth, and he will strike him with the sword cutting him into two pieces. Then he will call him, and he will come forward with his face beaming and laughing. So while he is doing that, 'Eisa bin Mariam, peace be upon him, will descend in eastern Damascus at the white minaret, between two Mahrud, with his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, drops fall, and when raises it, gems like pearls drop from him.' He said: 'His (the Dajjal's) breath does not reach anyone but he dies, and his breath reaches as far as his sight.' He said: 'So he pursues him(the Dajjal) and he catches up with him at the gate of Ludd where he kills him.' He said: 'So he remains there as long as Allah wills.' He said: 'Then Allah reveals to him: "Take my slaves to At-Tur, for I have sent down some creatures of Mine which no one shall be able to kill.'" He said: 'Allah dispatches Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and they are as Allah said: They swoop down from every mount.' "He said: 'The first of them pass by the lake of Tiberias, drinking what is in it. Then the last of them pass by it saying: "There was water here at one time." They travel until they reach a mountain at Bait Al-Maqdis. They will say: "We have killed whoever was in the earth. Come! Let us kill whoever is in the skies." They will shoot their arrows into the Heavens, so Allah will return their arrows to them red with blood. Eisa bin Mariam and his Companions be surrounded, until the head of a bull on that day would be better to them than a hundred Dinar to one of you today.' "He (s.a.w) said: "Eisa will beseech Allah, as will his companions.' He said: 'So Allah will send An-Naghaf down upon their necks. In the morning they will find that they have all died like the death of a single soul.' He said: " 'Eisa and his companions will come down, and no spot nor hand-span can be found, except that it is filled with their stench, decay and blood. So 'Eisa will beseech Allah, as will his companions.' So Allah will send upon them birds like the necks of Bukht(milch)camels.' They will carry them off and cast them into an abyss. The Muslims will burn their bows, arrows and quivers for seventy years.' "He(s.a.w) said: 'Allah will send upon them a rain which no house of hide nor mud will bear. The earth will be washed, leaving it like a mirror. Then it will be said to the earth: "bring forth your fruits and return your blessings." So on that day, a whole troop would eat a pomegranate and seek shade under its skin. Milk will be so blessed that a large group of people will be sufficed by one milking of a camel. And that a tribe will be sufficed by one milking of a cow, and that a group will be sufficed by the milking of sheep. While it is like that, Allah will send a wind which grabs the soul of every believer, leaving the remainder of the people copulating publicly like the copulation of donkeys. Upon them the Hour shall begin.'"

Explanation:
1:
There are two opinions regarding the meaning and intent of "fakhada fihi wa rafa'a":
One (khafada), in the sense of (haqara), meaning that he is lowly and insignificant in the sight of Allah, the Exalted. To the extent that Allah, the Exalted, created him one-eyed in this world. The statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that the Dajjal is more contemptible in the sight of Allah, Lord of Might, than this—that is, he will not have the power to kill anyone except this one man. Rather, he will be incapable of doing so. His affair will become weakened, and after that, he and his followers and supporters will be killed. As for (rafa'a), its meaning is the vastness of his evil and tribulation, and that the extraordinary things he will possess will be a great trial for the people. This is why every prophet warned his people about his tribulation. The second meaning of this phrase is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned him so extensively that after a lengthy discourse, his voice became low so that during the conversation he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam could rest, then his voice became loud again to inform everyone of this tribulation.
2:
That is, after my lifetime, during the tribulation of the Dajjal, the guardian of my ummah is Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
3:
Ludd:
It is a city near Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). In al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith, it is stated that Ludd is a place in the land of al-Sham (Greater Syria). It is also said to be a place in Palestine. (This is nowadays a military base of Israel.)
4:
The quantity of their weapons will be so great, or the number of Muslims at that time will be so few.
5:
In this hadith, there is mention of the signs of the Hour, the emergence of the Dajjal, the descent of ‘Isa ibn Maryam, the appearance of Gog and Magog (Ya’juj wa Ma’juj), and the important events that will occur between them. It describes the tribulations caused by the Dajjal, the calamities brought about by Gog and Magog, and their destruction at the hands of ‘Isa alayhis salam and through his supplications.

´Nawwas bin Sam'an Al-Kilabi said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned Dajjal, one morning, as something despised but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees. When we came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the evening, he saw that (fear) in us, and said: 'What is the matter with you?' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned Dajjal this morning, and you spoke of him as something despised but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees.' He said: 'There are things that I fear more for you than the Dajjal. If he appears while I am among you, I will contend with him on your behalf, and if he appears when I am not among you, then each man must fend for himself, and Allah will take care of every Muslim on my behalf. He (Dajjal) will be a young man with curly hair and a protuberant eye; I liken him to 'Abdul-'Uzza bin Qatan. Whoever among you sees him, let him recite the first Verses of Surat Al-Kahf over him. He will emerge from Khallah, between Sham and Iraq, and will wreak havoc right and left. O slaves of Allah, remain steadfast.' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how long will he stay on earth?' He said: 'Forty days, one day like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of his days like your days.' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, on that day which is like a year, will the prayers of one day suffice us?' He said: 'Make an estimate of time (and then observe prayer).' We said: 'How fast will he move through the earth?' He said: 'Like a rain cloud driving by the wind.' He said: 'He will come to some people and call them, and they will respond and believe in him. Then he will command the sky to rain and it will rain, and he will command the earth to produce vegetation and it will do so, and their flocks will come back in the evening with their humps taller, their udders fuller and their flanks fatter than they have ever been. Then he will come to some (other) people and call them, and they will reject him, so he will turn away from them and they will suffer drought and be left with nothing. Then he will pass through the wasteland and will say: "Bring forth your treasures," then go away, and its treasures will follow him like a swarm of bees. Then he will call a man brimming with youth and will strike him with a sword and cut him in two. He will put the two pieces as far apart as the distance between an archer and his target. Then he will call him and he will come with his face shining, laughing. While they are like that, Allah will send 'Eisa bin Maryam, who will come down at the white minaret in the east of Damascus, wearing two Mahrud[garment dyed with Wars and then Saffron], resting his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, beads of perspiration will fall from it. Every disbeliever who smells the fragrance of his breath will die, and his breath will reach as far as his eye can see. Then he will set out and catch up with him (the Dajjal) at the gate of Ludd, and will kill him. Then the Prophet of Allah 'Eisa will come to some people whom Allah has protected, and he will wipe their faces and tell them of their status in Paradise. While they are like that, Allah will reveal to him: "O 'Eisa, I have brought forth some of My slaves whom no one will be able to kill, so take My slaves to Tur in safety." Then Gog and Magog will emerge and they will, as Allah describes, "swoop down from every mound."[21:96] The first of them will pass by lake Tiberias and drink from it, then the last of them will pass by it and will say: "There was water here once." The Prophet of Allah, 'Eisa and his companions will be besieged there until the head of an ox would be dearer to any one of them than one hundred Dinar are to any one of you today. Then, the Prophet of Allah, 'Eisa and his companions will supplicate Allah. Then Allah will send a worm in their necks and the next morning they will all die as one. The Prophet of Allah 'Eisa and his companions will come down and they will not find even the space of a hand span that is free of their stink, stench and blood. They will pray to Allah, and He will send birds with necks like the necks of Bactrian camels, which will pick them up and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which will not leave any house of clay or hair, and it will wash the earth until it leaves it like a mirror (or a smooth rock). Then it will be said to the earth: "Bring forth your fruits and bring back your blessing." On that day a group of people will eat from a (single) pomegranate and it will suffice them, and they will seek shelter beneath its skin. Allah will bless a milch- camel so that it will be sufficient for a large number of people, and a milch-cow will be sufficient for a whole tribe and a milch-ewe will be sufficient for a whole clan. While they are like that, Allah will send a pleasant wind which will seize them beneath their armpits and will take the soul of every Muslim, leaving the rest of the people fornicating like donkeys, and upon them will come the Hour.'"
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The recitation of the first section (ruku‘) of Surah al-Kahf is a means of protection from the tribulation of the Dajjal.
➋ Scholars should narrate the authentic hadiths regarding the signs of the Hour to the general public, especially informing them about the Dajjal, so that they may safeguard themselves from this tribulation.
➌ The rain falling or drought occurring at the command of the Dajjal is a trial just like his Paradise and Hell, or his reviving the dead.
➍ During the era of the Dajjal’s appearance, the current system of day and night will be suspended for a limited period.
➎ On the day that will be as long as a year, it is commanded to estimate the times and perform all the prayers of the year accordingly. This indicates that at that time, people will have means by which they can accurately estimate time; this is a prophecy regarding the invention of the clock.
➏ This hadith also applies to those regions of the North and South Poles where, during certain parts of the year, the usual system of day and night does not remain. In such areas, the estimation of prayer and fasting times should be done by looking at the clock. If someone travels into space, the same principle should be observed there as well.
➐ ‘Isa (alayhis salam) is alive in the heavens. All Muslims are agreed upon this. It is also a unanimously agreed upon matter that he will return to the earth. Only Mirza Ghulam Qadiani and his followers differ in this.
➑ Many aspects of the life of ‘Isa (alayhis salam) possess miraculous qualities. Among them is that previously the disbelievers tried to martyr him, but now it will not be possible for disbelievers to remain alive within his sight.
➒ Ludd is a city located in Palestine (the present Jewish state of Israel). There is also an airport there. It is possible that the “gate of the city” refers to its airport, where the Dajjal, in his attempt to escape, will be seized by ‘Isa (alayhis salam).
➓ The Dajjal is also called “al-Masih” (the Messiah), but he is the false Messiah. ‘Isa (alayhis salam) is the true Messiah, by whose hand the Dajjal will be cast into Hell.
⓫ Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog) will be physically very powerful and extremely numerous, so ordinary people will not be able to confront them.
⓬ Where are Ya’juj and Ma’juj at present? This is not known; however, they certainly exist—there is no doubt about this.
⓭ It is not correct to declare the people of China, Russia, or any other country as Ya’juj and Ma’juj.
⓮ Ya’juj and Ma’juj will suddenly perish.
⓯ After the destruction of Ya’juj and Ma’juj, there will be great blessings in the produce of plants and animals.
⓰ The death of ‘Isa (alayhis salam) will occur in Madinah Munawwarah.
⓱ After him, there will be his successors (khulafa’); the number of Muslims will gradually decrease, and finally, the remaining Muslims will die due to a special wind.
⓲ The initial stages of the Day of Resurrection, such as: the blowing of the Trumpet and the death of all, etc., are extremely severe stages. Allah, the Exalted, will protect the Muslims from them.
