Anas bin Malik (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Allah, the Exalted and High, would say to one who shall have to undergo the least torture (on the Day of Resurrection): Would you like to go as ransom if you had all worldly riches; he would say: Yes. Allah would say to him: When you were in the loins of Adam, I demanded from you something easier than this that you should not associate anything with Me. (The narrator says): I think He also said: I would not cause you to enter Hell-Fire but you defied and attributed Divinity (to others besides Me).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: "You were in the loins of Adam" refers to the Covenant of Lordship (Mithaq-e-Rububiyyah) or the Covenant of Alast, which is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an in "And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam..." It is stated that before creating human beings in this world, it was already made clear to them and a firm promise was taken from them that they should not associate anyone with Allah. Human nature, intellect and consciousness, and through the Prophets and Messengers and the revealed Books and Scriptures, this covenant has been repeatedly reminded. However, despite this, the majority of humans, afflicted with the deadly disease of shirk (associating partners with Allah), are becoming fuel for Hell.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
On the Day of Resurrection, the disbelievers who are seized by Allah’s punishment will not attain salvation in any way. Allah, exalted is He, will say to them what is mentioned in the hadith solely to humiliate and disgrace them.
The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were disbelievers—never would the [whole] earth full of gold be accepted from any one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it.” ()
Rather, with even greater clarity and explicitness, He said:
“As for those who disbelieve, if they possessed all that is in the earth and as much again with it to ransom themselves thereby from the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them.” ()
