Jabir bin 'Abdullah reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying one mouth before his death (or something like it): None amongst the created beings who had been living by that time (during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle) (ﷺ) .... 'Abdul Rahman has interpreted these words of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as: The ages (of the people) would be diminished.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The meaning of "after the return from the Battle of Tabuk" is not that this question was asked immediately afterwards; rather, it simply means that the question was asked sometime after that event. From the narration of Jabir radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that this occurred in the last days of the Prophet's sallallahu alayhi wa sallam life. In response, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not inform about the time of the Day of Judgment for the entire world; rather, he mentioned the "Day of Judgment" (death) for those present at that time, indicating that one should be concerned about one's own end.
