Sa'd reported: This verse was revealed in relation to six persons and I and Ibn Mas'ud were amongst them. The polytheists said to him (the Holy Prophet): Do not keep such persons near you. It was upon this that (this verse was revealed):" Drive not away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening desiring only His pleasure" (vi. 52).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This thought occurred in the heart of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), upon his own desire and in hope of their acceptance of faith, that when these leaders arrive, he might ask these (poor) companions to leave the gathering, so that it would become easier to spread Islam through these leaders, and as for those (poor companions), they could attend at another time. However, Allah Almighty did not approve of this, and thus the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was prevented from showing favor to the polytheists.
