Anas bin Malik (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in the afternoon prayer. When he completed it, a person from Bani Salama came to him and said: Messenger of Allah, we intend to slaughter our camel and we are desirous that you should also be present there (on this occasion). He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes. He (the person) went and we also went along with him and we found that the camel had not been slaughtered yet. Then it was slaughtered, and it was cut into pieces and then some of those were cooked, and then we ate (them) before the setting of the sun. This hadith has also been narrated by another chain of transmitters.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Banu Salamah was at some distance from the Prophet’s Mosque. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went there. After he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) left, a camel was slaughtered, then its meat was cut up, and after that it was cooked and eaten before Maghrib. This is a clear proof that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform the ‘Asr prayer as soon as its time entered, and that time was the initial shadow (mithl awwal). Because, after performing the prayer, to reach ‘Awali at such a time that the sun was still high would not be possible otherwise. Similarly, to slaughter a camel, cook its meat, and eat it before evening would not be possible without having performed the prayer early.
