Asma' reported that a woman running high fever was brought to her. She asked water to be brought and then sprinkled it in the opening of a shirt at the uppermost part of the chest and said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said: Cool (the fever) with water, for it is because of the vehemence of the heat of Hell.

Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:

In one narration, it is stated: "Cool (the fever) with the water of Zamzam." What is meant here is the fever that arises from the agitation of yellow bile (safra’). In such cases, bathing more frequently with cold water or washing the hands and feet is also beneficial. Modern medicine has also acknowledged this; the use of ice in cases of severe fever is of the same category.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, after narrating the hadith of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu, has mentioned the hadith narrated from Asma bint Abi Bakr radi Allahu anha, in order to describe the manner of using water—that water should be poured into the collar of a person suffering from fever so that his body may be cooled by it.

(2)
In reality, when cooling fever with water, it is extremely important to take into consideration the region, the season, and the condition of the patient. In cases of bilious (safrawi) fever, indeed, the prescription of cold water is like an alchemical remedy. In any case, bathing and washing the hands and feet are also beneficial; thus, modern medicine has also acknowledged its effectiveness.
