Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When there is a call to prayer the devil runs back breaking the wind so that he may not hear the call, and when the call is complete he comes back. And when the takbir is pronounced he again runs back, and when takbir is over he comes back and distracts a man saying: Remember such and such, remember such and such, referring to something the man did not have in his mind. with the result that he does not know how much he has prayed; so when any one of you is not sure how much he has prayed. he should perform two prostrations while sitting (qa'da).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The primary purpose of building a mosque is prayer (salah), recitation (tilawah), remembrance and supplications (dhikr wa adhkar), and the teaching of religious knowledge and exhortation. Taking advantage of the gathering of people to announce a lost item is contrary to these objectives. Even Imam Malik rahimahullah considered scholarly debate and discussion to be undesirable if voices are raised as a result. Some scholars are of the opinion that a person cannot even ask for something for his personal need in the mosque; he may only ask for something related to religious necessity or for the benefit of the public.

Therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, despite being the Mercy to the Worlds (rahmatan lil-'alamin), supplicated against the one who announced his lost camel, which proves that it is not permissible to announce the loss of something outside the mosque within the mosque. This is especially the case during the times of prayer and teaching.

Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Commentary: (1) (Ḍāllah)
It refers to a lost animal, however, this term can also be applied to other lost items.

(2)
The purpose of this supplication against is to express disapproval of such an announcement.
This is also a style of admonition.

(3)
The purpose of constructing mosques is the performance of prayer, exhortation and advice, and teaching and learning; searching for lost things outside the mosque is not among its objectives.
