Hadith 2059

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ يَحْيَي ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا ، وقَالَ الْآخَرَانِ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " طَعَامُ الْوَاحِدِ يَكْفِي الِاثْنَيْنِ وَطَعَامُ الِاثْنَيْنِ يَكْفِي الْأَرْبَعَةَ " .
Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Food for one suffices two and food for two suffices for four.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ If the food is scarce, a Muslim should eat while being mindful of his fellow companions.

➋ By eating together, the food suffices for a slightly greater number of people and there is blessing (barakah) in the food.

➌ Mutual compassion and goodwill are distinguishing qualities of Muslims.
