Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: I am hard pressed by hunger. He sent (message) to one of his wives (to procure food for him) but she said: By Him Who has sent you with Truth, thrre is nothing with me (to serve him) but only water. He (the Holy Prophet) then sent the (same) message to another, and she gave the same reply, until all of them gave the same reply: By Him Who has sent thee with the Truth, there is nothing with me but only water, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Allah would show mercy to him who will entertain this guest tonight. A person from the Ansar stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, I am ready to entertain. He took him to his house and said to his wife: Is there anything with you (to serve the guest)? She said: No, but only a subsistence for our children. He said: Distract their attention with something, and when the guest enters extinguish the lamp and give him the impression that we are eating. So they sat down and the guest had his meal. When it was morning he went to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) who said: Allah was well pleased with what you both did for your guest this night.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that, as far as possible, one should deal with the needy and destitute with compassion and goodwill. If a person is unable to do this himself, then he should encourage others to do so. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) first tried to provide food for him from his own homes. When this was not possible, he then encouraged others. Then Abu Talhah (radi Allahu anhu), who was a wealthy Companion, took him along. However, coincidentally, that night there was not enough food in his house for the guest. Therefore, he fed him by means of a strategy, and did not let him feel that there was little food in the house, and that not everyone could be satiated, so that the guest would not feel hesitant in eating.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, two attributes—amazement (taʿajjub) and laughter (dahk)—are mentioned for Allah, and this is the truth. To discuss their modality (kayfiyyah) is an innovation (bid‘ah), and it is obligatory to have faith in them as they are apparent.
It is necessary to affirm the divine attributes (sifat ilahiyyah) without interpretation (ta’wil).
This is the method of the pious predecessors (salaf salihin).
The safety of faith lies only in following the way of the salaf, and nothing more.

Hadith Commentary:
The selflessness and compassion of the Ansar for the Muhajirun was eternal, exceptional, and unparalleled.
A beautiful incident related to this is also recorded as follows:
Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that when Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu arrived in Madinah Tayyibah, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam established brotherhood between him and Sa’d bin Rabi’ radi Allahu anhu.
Hazrat Sa’d radi Allahu anhu was very wealthy.
He said to Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu:
“The Ansar know that I am the wealthiest among them. Now I wish to divide half of my wealth between myself and you, and I have two wives; whichever of them you like, I will divorce her.
After her waiting period (‘iddah) is over, you may marry her.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Manaqib al-Ansar, Hadith: 3781)
Does such selflessness exist anywhere else in the history of the world?!
