Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
Cucumber or melon is cooling in nature, while dates are hot.
By combining the two, moderation and balance are achieved.
From this, it is understood that
it is better to eat foods that create moderation and balance in each other.
For this reason, Aisha radi Allahu anha states,
"After marriage, I was given cucumber and dates mixed together to eat, and I became plump from it." From this, it is also understood that
different types of foods can be eaten, and abundance and variety in foods is permissible,
provided that one does not exceed the limits of moderation and does not become gluttonous.

Hadith Commentary:
This is a matter of great wisdom and prudence: they are reformers of one another. The heat of dates is neutralized by cucumber, which is cooling. Abdullah was the first son of Ja'far radi Allahu anhu, who was born in Abyssinia.
Due to his abundant generosity, he was given the title "Bahr al-Jood" (the Ocean of Generosity).
He was extremely devoted in worship.
He passed away in the year 80 AH at the age of 90 in Madinah al-Munawwarah (radi Allahu anhu).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The wisdom in eating fresh dates together with cucumber is that the temperament of dates is hot and dry, while cucumber possesses a cold and moist temperament. By combining them, they act as correctives (muslih) for each other; that is, the heat of the dates is neutralized by the coolness of the cucumber, resulting in a balanced temperament. Accordingly, in some narrations it is mentioned that the coolness of one is neutralized by the heat of the other.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In a hadith from Tabarani, it is mentioned that a vessel containing milk and honey was brought to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so he said:
"Two relishes in one vessel—I neither eat it nor do I declare it unlawful."
(al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat by Tabarani, no. 7404)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, through this chapter heading and the presented hadith, has indicated the weakness of this hadith.
(Fath al-Bari: 9/710)
(2)
From this hadith, the permissibility of eating two fruits at the same time and combining two foods in one sitting is established.
It is also understood that there is latitude in food items, provided there is no suspicion of extravagance or ostentation.
What has been transmitted from some of our predecessors regarding its dislike will be understood as referring to not adopting it as a habitual practice.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
Aisha radi Allahu anha states that she was thin and slender. Her mother tried many treatments to make her gain weight, but she remained as she was, until she began to eat fresh dates mixed with cucumber, after which her thinness went away. In another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had prescribed this treatment and told the parents of Aisha radi Allahu anha to feed her fresh dates mixed with cucumber. (Fath al-Bari: 9/710) In any case, from these ahadith, the permissibility of eating cucumber is established. And Allah knows best.

Benefit:
In this hadith, there is mention of eating fresh dates and cucumber together. The effect of each is different from the other—one is hot (heating) and the other is cold (cooling). By eating them together, their effects become balanced (moderate).
When eating food, one should consider one’s own temperament; most illnesses occur due to negligence in eating.
