باب تَحْرِيمِ أَكْلِ لَحْمِ الْحُمُرِ الإِنْسِيَّةِ:Chapter: The prohibition of eating the meat of domesticated donkeys
وحَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ ، قَالَ : قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، وَمَعْنُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الْحِمَارِ الْأَهْلِيِّ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ وَكَانَ النَّاسُ احْتَاجُوا إِلَيْهَا " .
And Harun ibn Abdullah narrated to me, he said: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, Nafi‘ informed me, he said: Ibn Umar said. And Ibn Abi Umar narrated to us, my father narrated to us, and Ma‘n ibn ‘Isa, from Malik ibn Anas, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar, he said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade eating domesticated donkey on the day of Khaybar, and the people were in need of it."

Hadith Commentary:
According to these narrations, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam declared domestic donkeys to be unlawful (haram) on the occasion of the conquest of Khaybar. In fact, some narrations indicate that he made a formal announcement regarding this, as related by Abu Tha'labah radi Allahu anhu, who states that we fought the battle of Khaybar alongside the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
The people were afflicted with severe hunger, so they began to slaughter and cook domestic donkeys.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered Abdur Rahman ibn Awf radi Allahu anhu to make this announcement:
Beware! The meat of domestic donkeys is not lawful (halal).
(Sunan an-Nasa'i, al-Sayd wa al-Dhaba'ih, Hadith: 4346)
