It has been narrated by Abu Musa who said: Two of my cousins and I entered the apartment of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) . One of them said: Messenger of Allah, appoint us rulers of some lands that the Almighty and Glorious God has entrusted to thy care. The other also said something similar. He said: We do not appoint to this position one who asks for it nor anyone who is covetous for the same.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has greatly warned against seeking governmental positions, lest a person’s intention becomes corrupt and it leads to his ruin in the Hereafter.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever is appointed as a judge has indeed been slaughtered without a knife.”
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, al-Ahkam, Hadith 1325)
2.
A person who is slaughtered with a knife is finished within two or three minutes, but if someone is slaughtered without a knife, it is obvious that his end will not come quickly; rather, his suffering will be prolonged. That is to say, this is not a bed of roses but a necklace of thorns. However, if one desires it and strives to attain it, then how detestable is such an act!
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Such a person should be deprived of the position who himself seeks and is greedy for it.”
