It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) allowed two shares from the spoils to the horseman and one share to the footman.

Hadith Commentary:
By "faras" is meant a horse or a horseman? Some scholars are of the opinion that what is meant is "faaris," i.e., the horseman, because in contrast to this, the share of the foot soldier (pedestrian) has been mentioned.
According to them, the horseman receives two shares:
➊ One share for himself, and
➋ The other for his horse,
whereas the foot soldier receives only one share. However, according to the hadith scholars (muhaddithin), these shares are given due to the horse.
The explanation of Hazrat Nafi‘ (rahimahullah) supports the position of the hadith scholars, and this is what is most likely correct.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
So Allah Ta'ala did not specify the Arabian horse.
Both Arabian and Turkish horses will receive an equal share, meaning the mounted fighter will receive three shares, and the foot soldier will receive one share.
This is the opinion of most of the Imams and the Ahl al-Hadith.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
From this hadith, the majority of scholars have deduced that from the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanīmah), two shares are allotted for the horse and one share for its owner; that is, a combatant fighting on horseback is given three shares from the spoils, while a foot soldier is given only one share.
This is the position of Imam Malik rahimahullah, Imam Shafi'i rahimahullah, Imam Abu Yusuf rahimahullah, and Imam Muhammad rahimahullah.
➋
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has presented this hadith in support of this position, whereas Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah holds the view that the mounted combatant should be given two shares.
However, this position is contrary to the ahadith, and even his own students did not accept it. Furthermore, only the horse upon which the combatant is mounted should be allotted a share, because it is the one being utilized; a horse that is not ridden should not have a share allotted for it.
It is not possible for a person to ride two horses at the same time such that he would be given the share of two horses.
And Allah knows best.

Explanation:
1:
That is, the horseman was given three shares: one share for himself and two shares for his horse. The horse was allotted a greater share because its food and maintenance require considerable expense.

Benefits and Issues:
In jihad, the performance of a horseman is generally much greater compared to one who fights on foot.
Therefore, a share in the spoils (ghanimah) has also been allotted for the horse.
In contemporary times, the same ruling will apply to tanks, fighter planes, and other vehicles.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
A considerable amount of wealth is spent on keeping horses for jihad and taking care of them; therefore, a share of the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanima) has also been allotted for the horse.
Otherwise, it was possible that the mujahid’s share would be spent entirely on the service of the horse, and he himself would not be able to derive any personal benefit from the spoils of war for his own needs.
➋
The horse’s share is double that of a man’s share.
Therefore, a mujahid with a horse receives three shares.

«أخرجه البخاري، المغازي، باب غزوة خبير، حديث:4228، ومسلم، الجهاد والسير، باب كيفية قسمة الغنيمة بين الحاضرين، حديث:1762، وحديث: "أسهم لرجل..." أخرجه أبوداود، الجهاد، حديث:2733 وسنده صحيح.»©Explanation:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that in the distribution of war booty (mal-e-ghanīmah), the horseman receives three shares (two for his horse and one for himself), whereas the foot soldier receives only one share.
➋ The horse’s share is kept greater because its feeding and maintenance require considerable expenses.
