'Abdullah bin Sa'id reported: The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) led us in the morning prayer in Makkah and began Sarat al-Mu'minin (xxiii) but when he came to the mention of Moses (ؑ) and Aaron (verse. 45) or to the mention of Jesus (verse 50), a cough got the better of him, and he bowed. 'Abdullah bin Sa'ib was present there, and in the hadith narrated by Abdul Razzaq (the words are): He cut short (the recitation) and bowed.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
This hadith establishes that, in case of necessity, it is permissible to interrupt the recitation (qira’ah) in the middle, and it is not obligatory to complete the surah.
According to Imam Nawawi rahimahullah, without necessity, not completing the surah is permissible according to the majority (jumhur), but it is contrary to what is preferable (khilaf awla), meaning it is better to complete the surah. The well-known opinion of Imam Malik rahimahullah is that interrupting the recitation in the middle is disliked (makruh).

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The mention of Isa (alayhis salam) occurs in Surah Al-Mu’minun, verse (50), where three rukus are completed. It appears that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wished to continue reciting, but due to coughing, he ended the recitation. This also supports Hadith 818, in which the recitation of sixty to one hundred verses is mentioned.

➋ This narration also proves that it is not obligatory to recite an entire surah in prayer.

➌ If, during the recitation, the imam faces such an impediment that continuing the recitation becomes difficult, he should end the recitation and proceed to bowing (ruku’).
