Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported: While we were with the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey, a person came upon his mount and began to stare on the right and on the left, (it was at this moment) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: He who has an extra mount should give that to one who has no mount for him, and he who has surplus of provisions should give them to him who has no provisions, and he made mention of so many kinds of wealth until we were of the opinion that none of us has any right over the surplus.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Fadl:
That which is in excess of need,
Surplus.
(2)
Falya‘ud bihi:
He should do a favor to the one in need with it,
Express sympathy and goodwill.

Benefits and Issues:
A man came on a she-camel that was exhausted,
so he came before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and began looking right and left, and the she-camel also turned right and left so that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) might arrange a ride for him.
Because of this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) encouraged people to show sympathy and goodwill with surplus possessions. Some scholars have interpreted it to mean that he was turning the she-camel right and left out of pride and boasting, so that he could show off and indicate, “I have many mounts.” Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) exhorted the companions to show goodwill and sympathy, so that he (the man) would do a favor to those in need with his surplus mounts.

1663. Commentary:
➊ This man with the she-camel, who was making it turn around, perhaps the she-camel had become tired and was unable to walk further. This person adopted this approach so that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would see him and perhaps grant him some other favor.
➋ In situations of extreme necessity and hardship, delivering surplus wealth to those in need—as occurs during famine—is obligatory. In normal circumstances, it is recommended and encouraged. Based on such instructions, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (radi Allahu anhu) used to repeatedly admonish other Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) who were affluent and well-off, regarding the hoarding of wealth.
