Anas bin Malik (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to attack the enemy when it was dawn. He would listen to the Adhan; so if he heard an Adhan, he stopped, otherwise made an attack. Once on hearing a man say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) remarked: He is following al-Fitra (al-Islam). Then hearing him say: I testify that there is no god but Allah. there is no god but Allah, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: You have come out of the Fire (of Hell). They looked at him and found that he was a goatherd.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The sound of the call to prayer (adhan) coming from a village or settlement is evidence that its inhabitants are Muslim. Therefore, an attack should not be carried out on such a settlement. A shepherd's testimony to the oneness of Allah is proof of his being a Muslim. Upon this testimony, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave him the glad tidings of being saved from the Fire. This has no connection to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) possessing knowledge of the unseen (al-ghayb).

Benefits and Issues:
The hearing of the adhan (call to prayer) is an indication that the inhabitants of that place are Muslims.
Therefore, they were not attacked.
The absence of the sound of the adhan is an indication that the inhabitants of that place are not Muslims.
Hence, they would be attacked.
