Hadith 33

It is narrated on the authority of 'Itban bin Malik that he came to Madinah and said: Something had gone wrong with my eyesight. I, therefore, sent (a message to the Holy Prophet): Verily it is my ardent desire that you should kindly grace my house with your presence and observe prayer there so, that I should make that corner a place of worship. He said: The Prophet (ﷺ) came there, and those amongst the Companions whom Allah willed also accompanied him. He entered (my place) and offered prayer at my residence and his Companions began to talk amongst themselves (and this conversation centered round hypocrites), and then the conspicuous one, Malik bin Dukhshum was made the target and they wished that he (the Holy Prophet) should curse him and he should die or he should meet some calamity. In the meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (may peace and blessings be upon him) completed his prayer and said: Does Malik bin Dukhshum not testify the fact that there is no god but Allah and verily I am the messenger of Allah. They replied: He makes a profession of it (no doubt) but does not do it out of (sincere) heart. He (the Holy Prophet) said: He who testifies that there is no god but Allah and I am the messenger of Allah would not enter Hell or its (flames) would not consume him. Anas said: This hadith impressed me very much and I told my son to write it down.

Mahmud bin al-Rabi' reported that 'Ibn bin Malik, who was one of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) and who participated in the (Battle of) Badr and was among the Ansar (of Madinah), told that he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah, I have lost my eyesight and I lead my people in prayer. When there is a downpour there is then a current (of water) in the valley that stands between me and them and I find it impossible to go to their mosque and lead them in prayer. Messenger of Allah, I earnestly beg of you that you should come and observe prayer at a place of worship (in my house) so that I should then use it as a place of worship. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Well, it God so wills I would soon do so. 'Itban said: On the following day when the day dawned, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (may peace he upon him) came along with Abu Bakr (RA) at-Siddiq, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked permission (to get into the house). I gave him the permission, and he did not sit after entering the house, when he said: At what place in your house you desire me to say prayer? I ('Itban bin Malik) said: I pointed to a corner in the house, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood (at that place for prayer) and pronounced Allah-o-Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) (as an expression for the commencement of prayer). We too stood behind him, and he said two rak'ahs and then pronounced salutation (marking the end of the prayer). We detained him (the Holy Prophet) for the meat curry we had prepared for him. The people of the neighbouring houses came and thus there was a good gathering in (our house). One of them said: Where is Malik bin Dukhshun? Upon this one of them remarked: He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Do not say so about him. Don't you see that he utters La ilaha ill-Allah (There is no god but Allah) and seeks the pleasure of Allah through it? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. One (among the audience) said: We see his inclination and well wishing for hypocrites only. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) again said: Verily Allah has forbidden the Fire for one who says: There is no god but Allah, thereby seeking Allah's pleasure. Ibn Shihab said: I asked Husain bin Muhammad al-Ansar (he was one of the leaders of Banu Salim) about the hadith transmitted by Mahmud bin Rabi' and he testified it.

'Itban bin Malik reported: I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the rest of the hadith is the same as narrated (above) except this that a man said: Where is Malik bin Dukhshun or Dukhaishin, and also made this addition that Mahmud said: I narrated this very hadith to many people and among them was Abu Ayyub al-Ansari who said: I cannot think that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) could have said so as you say. He (the narrator) said: I took an oath that if I ever go to 'Itban. I would ask him about it. So I went to him and found him to be a very aged man, having lost his eyesight, but he was the Imam of the people. I sat by his side and asked about this hadith and he narrated it in the same way as he had narrated it for the first time. Then so many other obligatory acts and commands were revealed which we see having been completed. So he who wants that he should not be deceived would not be deceived.

Malik narrated it to me that he had said: Messenger of Allah, I have lost my eyesight, and the rest of the hadith is the same up to these words:" He led us in two rak'ahs of prayer and we detained the Messenger of Allah (صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) for serving him the pudding that we had prepared for him," and no mention has been made of what follows next from the addition made by Yunus and Ma'mar.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Footnote:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
‘Uzhm:
With a damma (u-sound) on the ‘ayn,
the major part,
Kubr with a damma or kasra (u- or i-sound) on the kāf,
the greater part.
(2)
Da‘ā ‘alayhi:
To supplicate against someone (to invoke a curse).

Benefits and Issues:
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said regarding the one who bears witness to the oneness of Allah and the messengership (tawhid and risalah) that the Fire is forbidden for him or that the Fire will not consume him. In such glad tidings, the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) intent and objective is to clarify the inherent quality of a good deed and its essential effect, and this quality and effect only manifest when there is no impediment present that would nullify its effect.

For example, when a physician says:
Whoever continually uses atrifal (a medicinal compound) will always be protected from catarrh (nazla),
is it correct to understand from this that there is no need for any abstinence or caution?
If that person continues to consume things that cause catarrh, such as:
oil,
sour things,
and similar items, will he still be protected from catarrh? The real purpose of bearing witness to tawhid and risalah is to accept the call to faith and to adopt the religion of Islam brought by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), as we have already explained earlier.

Therefore, the implication of bearing witness to tawhid and risalah is that such a person should be protected from punishment and the Fire, and should enter Paradise. However, if due to his own wretchedness, he has also committed some deeds whose inherent demand or effect, according to the Qur’an and hadith, is to incur punishment and enter the Fire, then obviously those deeds will also have some effect, and accordingly (if Allah, exalted is He, does not forgive him), he will have to spend some time in the Fire.

A Doubt and Its Clarification:
Some commentators of Sahih Muslim have written:
That some Companions suspected regarding Malik ibn Dukhshum that he did not recite the testimony (kalimah) from his heart, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) refuted this. From this, it is inferred that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was aware of the states of hearts.

The answer to this is:
That earlier such narrations have passed which establish that our duty is to judge according to what is apparent; we are not aware of anyone’s inner state, so it is not correct to pass judgment on that. Its decision is in the hand of Allah. Based on this principle, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated a general rule: “Lā yash-hadu ahadun”—whoever bears witness, and bearing witness is the conformity of heart and tongue.

That is, bearing witness is the testimony of the heart; merely saying it with the tongue is not bearing witness. That is why Allah, exalted is He, in Surah al-Munafiqun, refuted the hypocrites’ claim of bearing witness, and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to Usamah (radi Allahu anhu):
(Hal shaqaqta qalbahu)
“Did you split open his heart to see whether he had affirmed Islam in his heart or not?” And regarding the one who suspected hypocrisy in Ibn Dukhshum, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
(A-lā tarāhu qad qāla: lā ilāha illā Allah, yurīdu bi-dhālika wajh Allah?)
“Do you not see that he professes lā ilāha illā Allah and desires by it only the Face of Allah?”

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used the word “tarāhu” (do you not see), so was he aware of the states of his heart or was he looking into his heart? If the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was aware of the hearts, then why was it said:
﴿Lā ta‘lamuhum naḥnu na‘lamuhum﴾ “You do not know them; We know them.” (Tawbah: 101)
