Abu Hurairah (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: None of you must wash in standing water when he is in a state of Junub. And Abu Hurairah (RA) was asked how it was to be done; he said: It was to be taken out in handfuls.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
This hadith is also related to manners and ethics, as it is contrary to the refinement and decency that Islam teaches for a person to sit in standing water and perform the ritual bath (ghusl) for major impurity (janabah).
A person should, for this purpose, take water separately in a vessel and bathe.
Or, if there is no vessel, he should use the water in such a way that it does not return to the same water again.
It is obvious that no one would bathe while sitting in a small amount of water.
If the water is abundant, then he would bathe in such a way.
Therefore, in the hadith, no restriction has been placed regarding a small or large quantity of water, and there is much disagreement between the Shafi'is and the Hanafis regarding the amount that constitutes a small or large quantity of water.
The Shafi'is, based on an authentic hadith, consider less than two large pitchers of water to be a small amount, and more than that to be a large amount.
Since the Hanafis do not have an authentic and explicit narration on this issue, they do not agree upon a specific quantity. The Hanbalis' position is the same as that of Imam Shafi'i rahimahullah.
According to Imam Malik rahimahullah, the distinction between small and large quantities is not considered.
If any of the three characteristics (color, smell, and taste) change (in the case of impurity falling into the water), then the water becomes impure; otherwise, it is not considered impure. The hadith scholars (muhaddithin) prefer the position of the Shafi'is or Imam Malik rahimahullah.
