Hadith 2810

Ka'b reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said that the similitude of a believer is that of a standing crop in a field which is shaken by wind and then it comes to its original position but it stands at its roots. The similitude of a non-believer is that of a cypress tree which stands on its roots and nothing shakes it but it is uprooted (with) one (violent stroke).

Ka'b bin Malik reported on the authority of his father that the similitude of a believer is that of a standing crop. The wind sometimes shakes it and sometimes raises it up and then it comes to its destined end. And the similitude of a hypocrite is that of a cypress tree which is not affected by anything but is uprooted once for all.

The people began to think of the trees of the forest. 'Abdullah said: I thought that it could be the date-palm tree, but I felt hesitant (to say that). They (the Companions) then said: Allah's Messenger, (kindly) tell us which that can be? Thereupon he said: It is the date-palm tree. Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
al-khāmah:
A sapling,
A shoot emerging from the earth,
An initial grape cluster.
(2)
al-mujdhiyah:
Firmly planted,
Embedded in the ground.

Benefits and Issues:
A believer is affected by trials and hardships,
He strives to rectify his circumstances,
But a disbeliever, when affected by trials and hardships, does not turn towards obedience to Allah,
Until he is struck by the severe blows of death.

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning is that a believer is always submissive to the command of Allah Ta'ala and remains content with it. If at any time hardship or difficulty befalls him, he endures it with a cheerful face and continues to hope for good from Allah Ta'ala. Then, when the calamity is lifted, he expresses steadfastness by giving thanks to Allah Ta'ala.

In contrast, the hypocrite and the disbeliever remain prosperous in this world and are not subjected to any trial, so that the matters of the Day of Judgment may be severe for them. Ultimately, when Allah Ta'ala decrees his destruction, He uproots him all at once like a pine tree, so that his death becomes a severe torment and a grave punishment for him.

And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
The example of a believer is like a tender crop whose leaves bend in the direction of the wind; similarly, a believer submits before every command of Allah. And the example of a disbeliever is like the pine tree, which does not know how to bend or bow before the commands of Allah.
Until the punishment of Allah, in the form of death or otherwise, comes and suddenly bends him.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

When a believer is afflicted with hardships, it becomes an expiation for his sins. It is a cause for the elevation of his ranks. When he finds ease, he occupies himself with the remembrance and contemplation of Allah, just like the branch of a soft crop: when the wind blows, it bends this way and that, and when the wind stops, it stands upright. In contrast, the example of a disbeliever is like that of a pine tree; it does not bend due to the winds. Similarly, the disbeliever does not wish to submit before the commands of Allah, until Allah’s punishment or death suddenly destroys him. Then he presents himself before Allah with the entirety of his life’s sins, because his worldly life was spent in utmost comfort and ease.

Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith the will (mashiyyah) of Allah, meaning that when Allah intends to destroy him, his destruction occurs all at once. This means that all affairs in the world are carried out by the will of Allah. In this world of color and fragrance, not a single small or great matter comes to fruition without the will and intention of Allah, and His will is operative in everything, and He is fully capable over all things. And Allah knows best.
