Hadith Commentary:
The meaning is that if, after my arrival in Madinah, even ten Jews had accepted Islam, then all the other Jews would have followed their example and become Muslim as well.
What happened was that when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) arrived in Madinah, only Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu) accepted Islam, while the other Jewish leaders such as Abu Yasir, Huyayy bin Akhtab, Ka'b bin Ashraf, and Rafi' bin Abi al-Huqayq from Banu Nadir, and Abdullah bin Hanif, Qahas, and Rifa'ah from Banu Qaynuqa', and Zubair, Ka'b, and Shuwail from Banu Qurayzah—all of them remained opposed.
It is said that Abu Yasir came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and then went to his people and explained to them: "He is indeed the true Prophet; he is the very Prophet we have been waiting for. Accept what he says." But his brother opposed him, and because of his brother's opposition, the people of the tribe did not listen to Abu Yasir.
Maymun bin Yamin from among those Jews also became Muslim. His situation was similar to that of Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu).
At first, the Jews praised him greatly, but when they found out that he had become Muslim, they began to speak ill of him.

Hadith Commentary:
There were three Jewish tribes settled in Madinah Tayyibah, and among them, ten individuals held great influence and authority:
Among Banu Nadir: Abu Yasir ibn Akhtab, his brother Huyayy ibn Akhtab, Ka‘b ibn Ashraf, and Rafi‘ ibn Abi al-Huqayq.
Among Banu Qaynuqa‘: Abdullah ibn Hanif, Fakhkhas, and Rifa‘ah ibn Zayd.
Among Banu Qurayzah: Zubayr ibn Batiya, Ka‘b ibn Asad, and Shamwil ibn Zayd.
If these Jews had accepted Islam, then all the Jews of Madinah would have become Muslim, but none among them was granted Islam.
From among these leaders, only Abdullah ibn Salam radi Allahu anhu accepted Islam.
In one narration, it is mentioned that when Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu narrated this hadith, Ka‘b al-Ahbar said that the hadith mentions twelve individuals, because it is stated in the Qur’an:
“We appointed among them twelve leaders (naqib).” ()
(al-Ma’idah: 12: 5)
Upon hearing this, Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu remained silent.
Ibn Sirin says that, in our view, the status and value of Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu is greater than that of Ka‘b al-Ahbar.
