Anas bin Malik (RA) reported: There was a person amongst us who belonged to the tribe of Bani Najjar and he recited Sura al-Baqarah and Surat Al-'Imran and he used to transcribe for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . He ran away as a rebel and joined the People of the Book. They gave it much importance and said: He is the person who used to transcribe for Muhammad and they were much pleased with him. Time rolled on that Allah caused his death. They dug the grave and buried him therein, but they found to their surprise that the earth had thrown him out over the surface. They again dug the grave for him and buried him but the earth again threw him out upon the surface. They again dug the grave for him and buried him but the earth again threw him out upon the surface. At last they left him unburied.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The People of the Book gave great honor and respect to the hypocrite who chose apostasy, but Allah, the Exalted, made him a lesson for others even in this world. He was subjected to a humiliating death, and then the earth refused to accept him. They dug a deep grave for him three times and buried him, because they thought that the Muslims were throwing him out. Eventually, they realized that this was a punishment from Allah, so they left him lying outside, and he became a lesson for the people.

Hadith Commentary:
This was the punishment for his apostasy and for insulting the Messenger, that the earth, by the command of Allah, cast out his vile corpse.
Even today, those who are insolent towards the Messenger continue to receive such punishments.
If only they knew.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This was a sign from Allah Ta'ala which He showed to the people upon the apostasy of the Christian, that the earth repeatedly cast him out so that those who witnessed it would take heed, realizing that this is the state of an apostate—that even the earth does not grant him a place within itself.
➋
This hadith is a proof of the truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and evidence of his prophethood.
Even today, those who are insolent towards the Messenger continue to receive such punishments.
According to one narration, Anas (radi Allahu anhu) states:
He was from our tribe of Banu Najjar.
When he became an apostate,
people made much of the fact that he was a scribe of revelation. Eventually, while living among his companions, he suddenly died due to a broken neck, and the aforementioned incident occurred with him—that the earth did not accept him.
(Sahih Muslim, Sifaat al-Munafiqeen, Hadith: 7040(2781))
➌
Some commentators, referencing Sahih Muslim, have written that the name of this apostate was Abdullah bin Sa’d bin Abi Sarh, but I have not found this explicitly stated in Sahih Muslim.
And Allah knows best.
