Hadith 2761
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ حَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ يَحْيَى وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغَارُ وَإِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يَغَارُ وَغَيْرَةُ اللَّهِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ الْمُؤْمِنُ مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Allah is self-respecting and a believer is also self-respecting and the respect of Allah is injured if a believer does what He has forbidden him to do.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، وَحَرْبُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِ رِوَايَةِ حَجَّاجٍ ، حَدِيثَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ خَاصَّةً ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ حَدِيثَ أَسْمَاءَ .
Abu Salama reported from Abu Hurairah (RA) that he narrated that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon hin) said: There is none more self-respecting than Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. There is no mention of the narration of Asma'.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ الْعَلَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " الْمُؤْمِنُ يَغَارُ وَاللَّهُ أَشَدُّ غَيْرًا " ،
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A believer is self-respecting and Allah is extremely self-respecting.

وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْعَلَاءَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Shu'bah through another chain of transmitters.

Hadith Commentary:
Ghayrah (protective jealousy) is one of the attributes of Allah.
The Ahl al-Hadith interpret this, as with all other attributes, according to their apparent meaning and do not resort to figurative interpretation (ta'wil). They say that the true reality of this attribute is best known to Allah Himself.

Hadith Commentary:

A believing servant should not challenge Allah’s sense of honor (ghayrah) by committing those things which Allah has forbidden, because if he does so, Allah can immediately destroy and ruin him.
(2)
Some people interpret “ghayrah” (sense of honor) as meaning “anger,” since anger is a necessary consequence of ghayrah. However, according to our inclination, there is no need to interpret it in this way; rather, it should be understood in its real, literal meaning, just as is said regarding other attributes.
