'Umar bin Khattab reported that there were brought some prisoners to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) amongst whom there was also a woman, who was searching (for someone) and when she found a child amongst the prisoners, she took hold of it, pressed it against her chest and provided it suck. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Do you think this woman would ever afford to throw her child in the Fire? We said: By Allah, so far as it lies in her power, she would never throw the child in Fire. 'Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Allah is more kind to His servants than this woman is to her child.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The purpose of this hadith is not to liken Allah’s mercy to the mercy of a mother; rather, it is merely to express the abundance and vastness of His love and mercy, that He will not neglect His believing servants. If believing servants do enter Hell for some time, it will be the result of their evil deeds and wrongdoings, and as a consequence of His mercy, they will be taken out of Hell.

Hadith Commentary:
Most likely, this was the lost child of the woman who was found by her, and she embraced him to her bosom with such affection.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is clarified that this woman’s child had gone missing, so whenever she saw any child, she would embrace him to her chest and breastfeed him. Eventually, when she found her own child, she embraced him to her chest and was extremely happy.
This clarification shows that her breasts had become heavy due to the accumulation of milk, so whenever she saw any child, she would begin to breastfeed him in order to relieve the heaviness of her breasts.
(Musnad Ahmad: 3/104, and Fath al-Bari: 10/530)
(2)
Allah, the Exalted, will have mercy on His servants on the Day of Resurrection and will not cast them into Hell; however, those who have committed evil deeds and are deserving of Hell will certainly be handed over to Hell. It is as if they themselves are consigning themselves to the Fire.
(3)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says:
Although the word "‘ibad" (servants) in the hadith is general, what is meant by it are the people of faith, as Allah, the Exalted, has said:
“My mercy encompasses all things, but I will decree it for those who are God-fearing and righteous.” ()
In any case, a person should always strive to attain the mercy of Allah, the Exalted.
