Hadith 2716
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَاللَّفْظُ لِيَحْيَى ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ فَرْوَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَمَّا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْعُو بِهِ اللَّهَ ؟ قَالَتْ : كَانَ يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ " .
Farwa' bin Naufal Ashja'i reported: I asked: 'A'isha, in what words did Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) supplicate Allah? She said that he used to utter: "I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I did and from the evil of what I did not."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ فَرْوَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْ دُعَاءٍ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : كَانَ يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَشَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ " ،
Farwa' bin Naufal reported: I asked 'A'isha about the supplication that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made. She said that he used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَبَلَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ ، غَيْرَ أَنَّ فِي حَدِيثِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ : وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Muhammad bin ja'far through another chain of transmitters.

وحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ ، عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ يَسَافٍ ، عَنْ فَرْوَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي دُعَائِهِ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَشَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ " .
Farwa' bin Naufal reported on the authority of 'A'isha that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to supplicate (in these words): "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I did and from the evil of what I did not."

Benefits and Issues:
The occurrence of an evil deed and, similarly, the omission of a good and righteous deed—both are matters from whose evil we should seek refuge. However, since you (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) possessed the greatest knowledge of Allah, you were also characterized by the greatest fear (of Him). Therefore, despite performing the best of good deeds and avoiding evil and filthy actions, you still considered that perhaps there was some righteous deed which you ought to have performed but did not, and that the deeds you did perform might not have reached the level at which they should have been performed.
Furthermore, you were a role model for us. If you had not supplicated with this prayer, how would we have known about it, and how would we have learned the manner and method of asking (from Allah)? Also, among us, performing good deeds and avoiding evil actions could give rise to conceit, pride, and a sense of self-righteousness and purity, which is an extremely reprehensible crime. Therefore, we should make this supplication.
