Anas (b. Malik) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying. None of you should make a request for death because of the trouble in which he is involved, but if there is no other help to it, then say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as there is goodness in life for me and bring death to me when there is goodness in death for me.

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Anas through another chain of transmitters, but with a small variation of wording.

Nadr bin Anas reported, as when Anas was alive, that he said: Had Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) not stated this.." None should make a request for death," I would have definitely done that.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: In such types of hadiths, in reality, the prohibition is regarding wishing and longing for death that arises from being distressed or fed up due to some worldly hardship or difficulty. This is because such a wish is contrary to the quality of patience and perseverance. Furthermore, as long as a person is alive, he has the opportunity to purify himself through repentance (tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar), to increase his store of good deeds and acts of obedience (hasanat wa ta‘at) for the Hereafter, and to attain further closeness to Allah, the Exalted. Worldly trials and difficulties become an expiation (kaffarah) for his sins, and by praying for death, he wastes this opportunity, which is nothing but loss for the servant. However, if there is a fear of religious tribulation (fitnah) and corruption, and there is a danger of religious loss, then in that case, it is permissible to pray for death.
