Abu Wa'il reported: I was sitting with 'Abdullah and Abu Musa that they reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said: Prior to the Last Hour, there would be a time when knowledge would be taken away, and ignorance would take its place and there would be bloodshed on a large scale.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Day by day, killing, bloodshed, and terrorism are increasing, and as the Day of Judgment draws near, men will become extremely few in number. As a result, knowledge will decrease to the point of being almost completely lost.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
In these ahadith, several signs of the Day of Judgment have been mentioned, whose brief explanation is as follows:

The Shortening of Time:
Due to people indulging in luxury and comfort, the blessing will be removed from time to such an extent that a year will pass like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, and a day like an hour, because in pleasure and delight, one does not realize how time passes.

Decrease in Good Deeds:
Because of worldliness, people will not pay attention to improving their Hereafter.
There will be a decrease in good deeds, and people will take interest in evil deeds. Then, the deficiency in deeds will be due to a tangible deficiency in religion, and that will in turn become the cause of a spiritual deficiency in deeds.
Eating and drinking will not be good, and there will be no one to support them in doing good deeds, meaning the self will incline towards comfort and ease.

Abundance of Greed:
Due to the differing circumstances of people, diseases such as miserliness, greed, and avarice will arise in their hearts.
The root of greed and avarice is always present, but here what is meant is their dominance and abundance, which will become a cause of corruption and tribulations in the world.
Because of this greed, the distinction between lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram) will be erased.

Prevalence of Killing and Bloodshed:
Human life will have no value or worth; rather, people will be slaughtered like vegetables.
The killer will not know why he killed, and the one killed will not know for what crime he was put to death.
Nowadays, bomb blasts and suicide attacks are of this very nature.

Widespread Ignorance:
People will be ignorant of religious matters.
In this era of advancement in scientific knowledge, there is no interest in religion.
We ourselves observe that a husband divorces his wife fifteen times and then reconciles with her, and the community compels him to do so.
Because of ignorance, sacred relationships of sisters and daughters are being sacrificed to one's carnal desires.

Removal of Knowledge:
The people of knowledge will depart one by one.
In this way, with their departure, knowledge will also be taken away.
In such circumstances, people will ask the ignorant about religious matters.
They themselves will be misguided and will misguide others as well.
Even in this era, there is a scarcity of truly qualified scholars.

Dominance of Tribulations (Fitnah):
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated these ahadith to establish the dominance of tribulations.
Nowadays, tribulations are prevalent everywhere.
The tribulation of power, the tribulation of wealth, the tribulation of shamelessness, the tribulation of permissiveness, the tribulation of so-called enlightenment, and the tribulation of children.
In any case, at this time, tribulations are abundant.
One cannot grasp what should be done and what should not be done.
In such circumstances, one should continue to supplicate to Allah, the Exalted:
(Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min al-fitani ma zahara minha wa ma batan)
“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from tribulations, whether apparent or hidden.”
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
