Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying: Verily, a person performs deeds for a long time like the deeds of the people of Paradise. Then his deeds are terminated like the deeds of the people of Hell and, verily, a person performs deeds like the denizens of Fire for a long time, and then this deed of his is ultimately followed by the deeds of the people of Paradise.

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues: ➊ What kind of deed a person’s end will be upon, a human being, due to his limited and deficient knowledge, cannot be aware of this. ➋ Therefore, he thinks that so-and-so is performing deeds of the people of Paradise and his end will be upon that. ➌ However, it does not happen like this, ➍ because the motive and driving force behind those good deeds is not good, ➎ thus his end occurs upon an evil deed. ➏ In this way, another person, due to some compulsion, commits an evil deed, ➐ but in his heart he considers it evil and wishes to avoid that evil deed, ➑ thus his end occurs upon a good deed. ➒ Therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam added the restriction “as it appears to the people (fima yabdu lil-nas)” to this, ➓ just as in the next hadith it is mentioned that people think this, ⓫ whereas in reality it is the opposite, ⓬ which becomes manifest at the time of one’s end.
