Hadith 2608

'Abdullah bin Mas'ud reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Whom do you count as "Raqub" amongst you? They (his Companions) said: One who has no children (the children are born unto him but they do not survive). Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: He is not a Raqub but Raqub is one who does not find his child as the forerunner (in Paradise). He then said: Whom do you count as a wrestler amongst you? We said: He who wrestles with persons. He said: No, it is not he but one who controls himself when in a fit of rage.Abdullah bin Mas'ud reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Whom do you count as "Raqub" amongst you? Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Raqoob:
One whose children do not survive.
Sura‘ah:
A strong man,
a wrestler,
one who overpowers his opponent and whom no one can overpower.

Benefits and Issues:
Generally, people consider only that person to be childless
whose children do not remain alive,
whereas, according to the Shariah, the one who is truly childless is
the one whose children do not die during his lifetime, so that he may exercise patience at their death and seek reward from Allah, and on the Day of Resurrection, they may become his forerunners and leaders.
Similarly, a strong man,
a wrestler, is considered to be
one who overpowers his opponent,
whereas from the Shariah perspective, the truly strong and powerful person is
the one who controls himself at the time of anger,
because the greatest and most difficult task
is to subdue one’s own self and to have mastery over it.
For this reason, the self (nafs) is considered the most severe enemy, and especially in the state of anger, to control it is an extremely arduous and difficult task.
Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that the real and true claimant to being called strong and a wrestler
is that servant of Allah who, at the time of anger, controls his own self, and his ego does not compel him to any improper action or wrongdoing.
From this hadith, it is understood that perfection and virtue do not lie in, nor is it demanded from a servant, that he should never become angry,
because to become angry at someone’s extremely unpleasant action is a natural and innate emotion,
which cannot be eradicated.
What is required is that at the time of anger, one should have complete control over oneself,
so that one does not become overpowered by anger and commit actions contrary to the Shariah and the dignity of servitude.
