Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: When Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) went to call Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), he found him eating bread. Upon seeing this, he returned and informed you. From this, it is not evident that Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) had also informed Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) of your summons, or had told him to come immediately. Therefore, in accordance with the custom of the Arabs, you expressed informality by saying, "May Allah not fill his stomach," just as even today companions and friends, out of informality, say to someone eating, "Is your stomach a furnace that never gets full?" And you had said to the orphan girl of Umm Sulaym, "May her age not increase," or to Hafsah (radi Allahu anha), "‘Uqra Halqa," and sometimes said, "Taribat ‘Aynak." On such occasions, it is merely an expression of affection and informality; a curse is not intended. That is why Imam Muslim has included this among those hadiths which explain that if I supplicate against any of my followers in a way that he does not deserve, then make it a source of reward, mercy, and nearness for him. In this way, these words became a supplication in their favor.
