Jabir bin 'Abdullah (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Be on your guardagainst committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrection, and be on your guard against pettimindedness for pettimindedness destroyed those who were before you, as it incited them to shed blood and make lawful what was unlawful for them.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
"Oppression is darknesses":
In the Hereafter, when a person will be in need of light and illumination,
oppression and the usurpation of rights will become a cause of darknesses,
or will be a source of hardships and difficulties,
as is stated in the Word of Allah, the Exalted:
Ask them:
Who delivers them from the darknesses of the land and the sea?
Who saves you from the calamities and hardships of the land and the sea?
Therefore, it can also mean punishment and retribution.
(2)
"Al-shuhh":
Greed and desire,
to covet and crave for something that one does not possess.
And miserliness,
to withhold what one does possess,
not to spend it at the appropriate time and place.
Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith it is understood that greed and covetousness for wealth and property, and being enslaved by interests,
lead to mutual bloodshed and to making unlawful things permissible,
by which the world is also ruined and, in the Hereafter, these things will also be a cause of destruction and ruin.
