Abu Ayyub Ansari reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
an yahjur:
To abandon,
to leave,
that is, when coming face to face, instead of speaking to each other, they turn their faces away from one another.
However, taking into account human nature and temperament,
for up to three days a person remains safe from sin,
but if there is a Shar‘i (legal) requirement such that by speaking with him, there is a possibility of violating the limits set by the Shari‘ah, then severing relations is permissible, or it is permissible as a form of discipline and admonishment.
