Hadith 2548

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that a person came to Allah, 's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Who among the people is most deserving of a fine treatment from my hand? He said: Your mother. He again said: Then who (is the next one)? He said: Again it is your mother (who deserves the best treatment from you). He said: Then who (is the next one)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Again, it is your mother. He (again) said: Then who? Thereupon he said: Then it is your father. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Qutalba, there is no mention of the word" the people".

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Shubruma with the same chain of transmitters and the hadith transmitted on the authority of Wuhaib there is a slight variation of wording. Same is the case with the hadith transmitted on the authority of Muhammad bin Talha (and the words are):" Who amongst the people deserves the best treatment from me".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Husn Sahabati:
My best companionship, meaning good conduct, good social interaction, and service.

Benefits and Issues:
In Jami’ al-Tirmidhi and Sunan Abi Dawud, a question of this meaning was asked by Mu’awiyah bin Haydah al-Qushayri radi Allahu anhu to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and from this hadith it is understood that in terms of service and good conduct, the mother’s right is greater and takes precedence over the father’s.

This is because the mother, being of a delicate and weaker nature, is in greater need,
while generally, due to her compassion and gentleness, she is overlooked, and because of the father’s awe and authority and his being the guardian and protector of the household, he is given more consideration.

Therefore, in the Shari’ah, service to this weaker gender has been mentioned with greater importance.

Also, in the Noble Qur’an, while emphasizing good conduct with both parents,
specifically, the Qur’an mentions three hardships and difficulties of the mother:
pregnancy,
childbirth, in which the mother has to pass through an extremely difficult and agonizing stage of struggle between life and death,
then comes the stage of breastfeeding and nurturing,
in which the mother, for the sake of her child, has to sacrifice her own comfort and peace,
has to give up many things,
and has to endure the harsh and cold conditions of hot and cold seasons.
