Hadith 2511

Abu Usaid reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The worthiest clans of the Ansar are Banu Najjar, thereafter Banu al-Ashhal; thereafter Banu Harith bin Banu Khazraj; thereafter Banu Sa'idah and there is goodness in all clans of the Ansar. Sa'd said: I see that he (the Holy Prophet) has placed others above us. It was said to (him): He has placed you above many others.

Abu Usaid Ansar reported: I bear witness to the fact that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: The best settlements of the Ansar are of those of Banu Najjar, then of Banu 'Abu al-Aslihal and then of Banu Harith bin Khazraj, then of Banu Sa'ida and there is in every settlement of the Ansar good. Abu Salama reported that Abu Usaid said: Can I tell a Iie about Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ? And if I were a liar, I would have started with my tribe Banu Sa'ida. This was conveyed to Sa'd bin 'Ubida and he found (rankling) in his mind and said: We have been left behind (in the sense) that we have been (mentioned) last of the four. He (Sa'd) sid: Saddle my pony so that I should go to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . His nephew saw him and said: Are you going to contradict (the order of) precedence set by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , whereas Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has the best knowledge of it? Is it not sufficient for you that you are the fourth amongst the four (best tribes of the Ansar)? So he returned and said: Allah and His Messenger know best, and he commanded that his pony should be unsaddled.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
According to the standard of Islam, the basis of virtue and superiority depends on adopting the religion first, acting upon it, and supporting and aiding it. As the statement of Allah is: "Indeed, the most honored and respected among you in the sight of Allah is the one who is most mindful of His limits and commands." Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13. And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) placed Banu Sa‘idah, whose chief was Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah (radi Allahu anhu), in the fourth rank, even though there are many other Ansari tribes. Therefore, it was said to them: You have been given preference over many tribes.

Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Up to this point, the Imam has described the virtues of the Ansar and, in the light of Qur’anic verses and hadiths, has clearly explained that love for the Ansar is a part of faith. Islam owes many favors to these people; they are the fortunate Muslims who had the honor of hosting the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in Madinah. These are the people who fulfilled the covenant of loyalty they made with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Therefore, making supplication for their well-being is necessary for every Muslim until the Day of Judgment. Those who are called Ansari, who generally engage in the excellent trade of cloth-making, as far as their genealogies are concerned, in reality, they are connected to the very families of the Prophetic Ansar. All praise is due to Allah, even today these individuals are seen at the forefront in supporting Islam. May Allah increase their number, Ameen.
Now, the virtues of some of their distinguished individuals are about to be mentioned.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

The Ansar gave the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) a place to stay and supported Islam.
Their time has passed; no one else can share in this honor with them, nor can anyone surpass them.
Whoever among them passes away, his place will never be filled, thus their numbers will continue to decrease while others will increase, until the Ansar will remain as little as the amount of salt in food.
In contrast, the Muhajirun will be the rulers. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) advised that kindness should continue to be shown to the Ansar and that causing them harm should be avoided.
Some people have inferred from this hadith that the Ansar will never attain rulership, but this position is not clear.

In reality, this hadith is a great miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): the Ansar are decreasing day by day, even though there are many who claim to be from them, but those who make such claims have no proof of being Ansar.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Note:
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), through these ahadith, has highlighted the collective character of the Ansar. From this, it can be inferred how the Ansar greatly honored their Muhajirun brothers and how much love, sincerity, selflessness, and sacrifice they displayed.
Likewise, the Muhajirun also greatly valued this generosity and honor; thus, they did not take undue advantage of the Ansar’s offer, but only took as much as was necessary to support their broken livelihoods.
Indeed, through the system of brotherhood (mu’akhat) established by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the biased attitudes of the Age of Ignorance, distinctions of color, race, and homeland were erased. The only standard for elevation or abasement was humanity and piety, nothing else.
Truly, this brotherhood was a unique strategy, a wise policy of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and a solution to the problems faced by the Muslims.
In this regard, the cooperation of the Ansar is an example for which the history of the world is unable to present a parallel.
May Allah, the Exalted, grant these pure personalities a lofty status in His presence and grant us their companionship on the Day of Judgment.
Ameen.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has described the Ansar as "karsh" and "aliyah."
"Karsh" refers to the stomach, which is the place where food settles and through which an animal grows and develops. "Aliyah" is the small chest in which a person keeps precious and valuable things for safekeeping.
The meaning of this is that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has regarded the Ansar as his trustworthy confidants and people of trust.
It was the responsibility of the Ansar to provide a place for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and to give him full support, which they fulfilled completely. The duty of supporting Islam that was upon them, they also carried out.
Now it is your turn to treat them well.
Do not subject them to any kind of harm.
Accept the good words of those among them who are righteous, and overlook the mistakes of those who err.
This is now the fulfillment of their rights, which you must carry out.
