باب مِنْ فَضَائِلِ سَلْمَانَ وَصُهَيْبٍ وَبِلاَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمْ:Chapter: The Virtues Of Salman, Bilal And Suhaib (RA)
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَائِذِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو : " أَنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ أَتَى عَلَى سَلْمَانَ وَصُهَيْبٍ ، وَبِلَالٍ فِي نَفَرٍ ، فَقَالُوا : وَاللَّهِ مَا أَخَذَتْ سُيُوفُ اللَّهِ مِنْ عُنُقِ عَدُوِّ اللَّهِ مَأْخَذَهَا ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : أَتَقُولُونَ هَذَا لِشَيْخِ قُرَيْشٍ وَسَيِّدِهِمْ ؟ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ : لَعَلَّكَ أَغْضَبْتَهُمْ لَئِنْ كُنْتَ أَغْضَبْتَهُمْ لَقَدْ أَغْضَبْتَ رَبَّكَ ، فَأَتَاهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَا إِخْوَتَاهْ أَغْضَبْتُكُمْ ؟ قَالُوا : لَا ، يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكَ يَا أَخِي " .
'A'idh bin Amr reported that Abu Sufyan (RA) came to Salman, Suhaib and Bilal (RA) in the presence of a group of persons. They said: By Allah, the sword of Allah did not reach the neck of the enemy of Allah as it was required to reach. Thereupon Abu Bakr (RA) said: Do you say this to the old man of the Quraish and their chief? Then he came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) (may peace be upon'him) and informed him of this. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Abu Bakr, you have perhaps annoyed them and if you annoyed them you have in fact annoyed your Lord. So Abu Bakr (RA) came to them and said: O my brothers, I have annoyed you. They said: No, our brother, may Allah forgive you

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This incident took place during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, at a time when Abu Sufyan had not yet embraced Islam. Since he was the chief and leader of his people, Abu Bakr said, "You should not adopt this manner." So the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to Abu Bakr, "He said this out of religious zeal and honor, so you should not have discouraged him." From this, it is understood that people of religion should not break the hearts of those of lesser status; rather, they should treat them with gentleness and respect. Before supplicatory words, "la" (no), should not be said in such a manner that it becomes a curse. Therefore, Abu Bakr used to prohibit in this way; he would say, "Say: 'Aafak Allah' (may Allah grant you well-being), 'Rahimak Allah' (may Allah have mercy on you), but do not use 'la' before them."
