Hadith 2465

Anas is reported to have said: Four persons collected the Qur'an during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and all of them were Ansar: Mu'adh bin Jabal, Ubayy bin Ka'b, Zaid bin Thabit, Abu Zaid. Qatada said: Anas, who was Abu Zaid? He said: He was one of my uncles.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: By "collection" here is meant the writing down of the entire Qur'an, that these individuals had written the complete Qur'an. Memorization of the Qur'an is not intended here, and this too they have stated according to their own knowledge. They only had knowledge of what they themselves knew. In reality, the number of memorizers (huffaz) who were martyred in the Battle of Yamama was seventy (70), and it was for this very reason that Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) intended to collect the Qur'an, that if the memorizers of the Qur'an continued to be martyred in various battles in this manner, then perhaps some part of the Qur'an might become lost. Then how is it possible that none of the Muhajirun had memorized the Qur'an, even to the extent that the four Rightly Guided Caliphs (khulafa’ ar-rashidun) would also have been deprived of this? Furthermore, all four of these individuals were from the Khazraj tribe—had no one from the Aws tribe memorized the Qur'an? And Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu) had his own codex (mushaf), which he had not handed over to the caliph.
