Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Gabriel (ؑ) came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger, lo. Khadija (RA) is coming to you with a vessel of seasoned food or drink. When she comes to you, offer her greetings from her Lord, the Exalted and Glorious, and on my behalf and give her glad tidings of a palace of jewels in Paradise wherein there is no noise and no toil. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) through another chain of transmitters with a slight variation of wording.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would seclude himself in the Cave of Hira, Lady Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) would bring him food and drink. And when he conveyed to Lady Khadijah the greeting of peace (salam) from Allah the Exalted, she replied, "Indeed, Allah is As-Salam (the Source of Peace), and upon Jibril be peace, and upon you, O Messenger of Allah, be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." (Sunan an-Nasa'i) From this, Lady Khadijah's understanding, intelligence, and insight become evident, as she did not say, "Peace be upon Allah" (as-salamu ala Allah), because He is the One who grants peace; He is not in need of the supplication for peace. For this reason, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade the noble Companions from saying "Peace be upon Allah" and said, "Indeed, Allah is As-Salam."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In one narration, when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) conveyed the greeting of peace from the Lord to Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), she replied:
Allah, Exalted is He, is the very essence of peace, so peace be upon Jibril (alayhis salam), and O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), peace be upon you as well, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.
(Al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Nasa’i: 5/94)
In another narration:
Peace is upon whoever hears this, except the accursed Shaytan.
(‘Amal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah by Ibn al-Sunni, no. 239)
Allah, Exalted is He, granted Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) understanding and insight.
She did not reply to the greeting from Allah with “alayhis salam” because He Himself is Peace, but rather, the greeting of peace is replied to when it comes from the creation.
Then, she made an exception for the accursed Shaytan, because he is not deserving of peace or supplication.
2.
Jibril (alayhis salam) conveyed the greeting of Allah, Exalted is He, to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) through his mediation; he did not greet him directly, because this was required out of respect for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). However, Jibril (alayhis salam) greeted Maryam (alayhas salam) directly, addressing her personally, because she had no mahram through whom the greeting would be conveyed.
