Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The beginning of this blessed verse is as follows:
"Remain settled in your homes and do not display your adornment as was the practice of the former days of ignorance, and establish prayer and give zakat (alms) so that Allah may remove impurity from you,"
until the end.
From this, it is clear that the original and primary referents of this verse are the Pure Wives (azwaj mutahharat), and anyone else can only be included secondarily and legally, and due to the blessing of your (the Prophet’s) supplication, the aforementioned individuals are included additionally and in a secondary manner.
The context of the Qur’anic verses, that is, what comes before and after, is exclusively about the Pure Wives;
no other possibility exists.
As for the issue of the masculine pronoun, according to the Qur’an and Arabic idiom, a wife can be addressed with the plural masculine form.
The wife of Ibrahim (alayhis salam) was addressed by the angels with "alaykum ahl al-bayt" (upon you, people of the house),
and in the incident of Musa (alayhis salam), it occurs in several places:
ataykum,
la‘allakum,
tastalun—
the plural masculine forms are used while addressing the wife.
This style is also found in Arabic poetry and hadiths.
