'Amir bin Sa'd reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) gathered for him on the Day of Uhud his parents when a polytheist had set fire to (i. e. attacked fiercely) the Muslims. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said to him: (Sa'd), shoot an arrow, (Sa'd), may my mother and father be taken as ransom for you. I drew an arrow and I shot a featherless arrow at him aiming his side that lie fell down and his private parts were exposed. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) laughed that I saw his front teeth.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
1.
The people of Banu Asad complain about me to Umar radi Allahu anhu, saying that he does not even know how to perform the prayer properly. Yet I am among the earliest Muslims. If I now need to learn prayer from them, then all my previous deeds have been rendered void. Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu describes the circumstances of his early life, saying: I accepted Islam at a time when Muslims had nothing to eat or drink except the leaves of trees. In such conditions, during the call of nature, only dry excrement would come out. Because eating the leaves of trees, like camels and goats, results only in dry excrement. In any case, Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu is stating his status as an early Muslim and wants to make it clear that the complaints of the tribe of Banu Asad about him are not based on reality.

3.
Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu passed away at the place of Tahqiq, ten miles from Madinah Tayyibah. From there, he was brought to Madinah Tayyibah and buried in Jannat al-Baqi’. Marwan bin Hakam led his funeral prayer. His date of death is Muharram 55 AH, corresponding to December 674 CE. He lived to the age of eighty-three. Radi Allahu ta’ala anhu.

Hadith Commentary:
What can be said about the fortune of the person for whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) uttered such magnificent words.
Indeed, Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) was truly deserving of this blessed supplication.

Hadith Commentary:
In one hadith, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took out all the arrows from his quiver and scattered them before them, and said:
“Shoot arrows! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4055)
Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) states that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not combine his parents (in this phrase) for any other companion except Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu).
(Fath al-Bari: 7/107)
However, in a previous hadith, it has been mentioned that this honor was also granted to Hazrat Zubair ibn al-Awwam (radi Allahu anhu).
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes:
Perhaps Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) was not aware that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had also said this for Hazrat Zubair, or that on the day of Uhud, this honor was not given to anyone except Sa’d.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4055)

Hadith Commentary:
Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) was a great archer.
During the Battle of Uhud, the disbelievers were advancing continuously.
He shot arrows in such a way that not a single disbeliever was able to reach the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
It is said that even the arrows ran out, and when a disbeliever came very close, only one arrow remained, which was just a bare wooden shaft.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu), “Shoot this arrow.”
Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) shot it, and it penetrated the body of that disbeliever.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) then made the supplication for him which is mentioned in the narration, in which there is utmost encouragement.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Ahraka al-muslimin:
He roasted (burned) the Muslims,
He carried out a massacre against them. Therefore, when Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) took aim at him,
shot an arrow at him, and he fell flat on his back, Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) laughed out of happiness at his killing and humiliation,
not because his private parts became exposed,
but because he was disgraced in front of everyone.

Benefit:
In this, Sayyiduna Sa'd radi Allahu anhu has described the early conditions of the Muslims, that in the initial period we faced so many hardships. At the time of necessity (especially when someone is trying to humiliate a person), it is permissible to mention one's good deeds; however, ostentation or pride should not be intended in this. It is also established from this that Sayyiduna Sa'd radi Allahu anhu was the seventh person to embrace Islam.
