Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
"Wafaqtu Rabbi fi thalath":
In three incidents,
I agreed with my Lord,
meaning Allah’s command was revealed in accordance with my wish and intention.
Since regarding these three incidents,
Allah’s command was exactly this,
even though the command was revealed later,
therefore Umar radi Allahu anhu said,
“My opinion turned out to be in accordance with Allah’s command,” or, “I did not know Allah’s command,”
but out of etiquette, respect, and in view of Allah’s greatness, he said,
“I agreed,”
he did not say,
“Allah’s command was revealed according to my opinion.” And the restriction to three is not absolute,
because the number of Umar’s radi Allahu anhu agreements (muwafaqat) exceeds twenty.
Shah Waliullah rahimahullah has a separate treatise on this subject.
