Humran bin Abin reported: I used to fetch water for 'Uthman for his purification. Never was there a day that he did not take a bath with a small quantity of water. And 'Uthman said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) at the time of our returning from our prayer told us (certain things pertaining to purification). Mis'ar said: I find that it was afternoon prayer. He said: I do not know whether I should tell you a thing or keep quiet. We said: Messenger of Allah, tell us if it is good and if it is otherwise, Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) know better. Upon this he said: A Muslim who purifies (himself) and completes purification as enjoined upon him by Allah and then offers the prayers, that will be expiatious (of his sins he committed) between these (prayers).

Jami' bin Shaddad reported: I heard Humran bin Aban narrate to Abu Burda in this very mosque during the governorship of Bishr that 'Uthman bin Alfan said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed: He who completed ablution as Allah, the Exalted, enjoined upon him, his obligatory prayers would be expiatious (for his minor sins that he would commit) during (the interval) between them. This hadith is transmitted by Ibn Mu'adh, and in the hadith narrated by Ghundar, the words "during the governorship of Bishr" are omitted and there is no mention of the obligatory prayers.

(2) يُفِيضُعَلَيْهِ: He pours over himself, that is, performs ritual bath (ghusl).
(3) مَاأَدْرِي: I was unable to decide, whether mentioning this matter would be beneficial or not, then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) considered it better to mention it in order to encourage and exhort towards purification and prayer.

´It was narrated that Jami' bin Shaddad - AbuSakhrah - said:` "I heard Humran telling Abu Burdah in the mosque that he had heard 'Uthman bin 'Affan narrating that the Prophet had said" 'Whoever performs ablution perfectly as Allah has enjoined, then his prescribed prayer will serve as expiation for what is between them."

Benefit: From such ahadith, one should not misunderstand that no matter how many sins a person who prays commits, there is no harm. Because a deficiency in the etiquettes of prayer and in humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘) also results in a deficiency in the forgiveness of sins. And it is also possible that due to some grave sin, a person is not even granted the ability (tawfiq) to perform prayer at all. In fact, sometimes the prayer is so deficient that instead of bringing a person closer to Allah Ta‘ala, it causes Allah Ta‘ala to become even more displeased with him.
