Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Musaylimah the Liar belonged to the great warrior tribe of Banu Hanifah, and those people held him in great reverence, to the extent that, may Allah protect us, they used to call him "Rahman of Yamamah." He claimed prophethood in the 10th year after Hijrah and, along with many members of his tribe, came to Madinah and stayed at the house of Ramla bint Harith, where delegations used to stay. Since he had come to meet the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and claimed to be a Muslim, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went to him, so that his and his tribe’s hearts might be reconciled and the message of Islam could be conveyed to them. However, when he expressed his desire to obtain the caliphate, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "Regarding you, I will never go beyond what Allah has commanded. As for the caliphate, that is out of the question; I will not even give you this twig. And if you do not obey me and turn away, then Allah’s decree regarding you is that He will destroy you." And according to this prophecy of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Musaylimah was killed in the Battle of Yamamah, and the dream shown to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding him was fulfilled before his eyes. Hazrat Thabit bin Qais (radi Allahu anhu) was known as the orator of the Ansar; he used to respond to the speeches of incoming delegations, which is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "If you are fond of lengthy speech, then here is this proof on my behalf." Since bangles are not an ornament for men, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) interpreted and explained them as referring to the liar, because falsehood is contrary to reality, and they were made of gold, which is called "dhahab," and "dhahab" also means to vanish or to be finished. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered that they be blown away, and they disappeared. As for Aswad Ansi, who had become king in Sana'a after the death of Bazan, the Muslim governor, he was sent to Hell a day and a night before the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing, and Musaylimah was sent to Hell during the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu).
